More like a short action Swede...
I have owned a couple of 6.5 rifles in Creedmoor as well as others, but my Creedmoors were target rifles not hunting rifles.
There are lots of decent components available for it , one reason I had a barrel done up in it.
However it is not a cartridge I would consider Hunting with if I
Had access to a single shot rifle in a different 6.5 cartridge .

I like short action compact rifles, they feel comfortable in my hands, so for this the 6.5 CM would be a good fit.
- that fits in a short action with room to spare for seating out.
- that is easier to find better ammo for with more selection.
- that is easier to find faster twisted factory rifles for.
- that offers a better selection of factory rifles.
It's fine, but from the date it was released, it was redundant.
Good marketing on the part of Hornady; they shut out a very similar and excellent European cartridge out of North America; the Lapua 6.5 x 47.
Regarding it's performance, check reloading books; the 260 Remington out performs it with light bullets, the 6.5 x 55 outperforms it with heavy bullets; in modern rifles designed for higher pressure loads, the 6.5 x 55 SE or SKAN outperforms it in all classes.
The 6.5 is still around and alive and doing well 124 years later; the CM, only a few years. Time will tell. I predict that the next fad will have the "in" crowd dropping the CM for the flavor of the month. The old Swede will still be around.

As others have previously stated, and what most forget (maybe conveniently) is that the 6.5Cm, is, was and always will be first and foremost a target/bench round with a lot of marketing behind it. This is what the 6.5CM was originally designed and intended for.

Take a look around at your LGS or some site sponsors online and see their inventory of 6.5mm projectiles or factory ammo compared to typical hunting cartridges. There’s more demand & availability of ”6.5mm Match” stuff then your typical hunting cartridges currently. Retailers know this and have ordered accordingly. Manufacturers are just reaping the rewards of the 6..5CM in Match/Target demand configurations.
The fact that it performs well on both paper and on Deer/Antelope sized game at typical range (300 under) came as an unexpected bonus to the 6.5CM no doubt.
Would I trust or use it on med-large game like Elk or Moose? No
Would I trust or use it on a once-in-a-lifetime Sheep/Goat hunt? No
I’d reach for another Cal with more KE behind it at typical or longer hunting ranges. Paper performance & hype is a far cry from actual game effectiveness. I’d gladly lose a bit of speed & trajectory for a higher KE at range then the 6.5CM offers in those two scenarios. Especially If I spent large $$ on a Sheep/Goat trip
Does it do anything better then say the .260, 6.5x55, 6.5x284 or a bevy of others that have been around longer?
Well.. that’s going to always be a forum debate and up to the end user to decide ultimately…. Kinda like those 308 vs 30-06 or 9mm Vs .45 debates..
YMMV but I’m not in the camp or on the band wagon of the 6.5 Needmore personally..

Likely no more disturbed than someone who 'Loves' it and feels the need to blaggard every other cartridge near it in capabilty.

The 6.5 was designed to feed reliably in an AR10 length magazine with reasonably heavy bullets. This is something that no previous 6.5 cartridge was as good at.
That basically distills it down objectively. It’s a medium capacity 6.5, with modern standardization, that fits short-actions, and AI or AR10 magazines as well. Not a bad place to be really.
I have owned a few 6.5CM rifles, and like the chambering a lot. That said, if I were to have a walnut/blued custom built, it’d be chambered in the Swede. Just cause.
Oh gotcha, better than any 6.5 cartridge. I was going to say that's a bold claim lol.
