Advice on the 260 remington

As some of you might know I was going to make a LH Remington 788 into a 25-08.

Dies and reamer are going to be a challenge to get though...


So I'm thinking of possibly chambering it to 260.

Any experience with the calibre?
 
Good choice. Don’t make it harder then it needs to be.
I’m assuming your 788 is a 308. Don’t shoot it if you plan on changing calibres.
Mine was unbelievably accurate.

The 260 is a nice deer cartridge. Try the 120 Sierra pro hunter or 120ttsx. RL 17 is the powder I use but it’s not picky. Resize 243 brass in a 260 die too.

Yeah, if I had dies and reamer I'd do it. Atleast with the 260 there's ammo and all the stuff the change the calibre available.

Yes, it in 308.
 
You could also go to a 257 Roberts

No flies on the 260 though and it has a better selection of bullets available

The other thing you could do, is get a 243 reamer and use a 257 Neck/Throat reamer to to clean up to what you want. It could also be used to cut a 243 sizing die
 
.260 Remington is an excellent choice. As stated above, 120 gr is kind of the standard in this caliber, but they work well with lighter bullets as well. If you want to use heavier bullets, you might consider a bit faster twist when you order a barrel.
 
I ran a .260 Remington for years. I picked one up in a 700 LSS mountain rifle. Had it 20 years and it was an awesome all around handling and deer rifle. Easy to load for, plenty of donor brass about. Only hit on it is ammo availbility. Remington's short-sighted-ness on marketing that caliber let it fall by the wayside and newer upstarts like 6.5CM became the thing.

I have a 25-06 so no roberts in the 788, if I'd go that way Id have to modify the bolt since it's a 308.

If I where to use a 257 neck reamer I might run into issues with shoulder angle.
 
I have two .260s. One is a sporter built up on a 700 action with a take-off factory barrel. Perfectly competent hunting rifle.
The second is a target rifle based on a 700, with Kreiger 1-8" twist Light Palma barrel in a MilCun laminated stock topped with a Sightron 6-24 scope. I have fired it back to 1000m, and it is superb with 139-142gr Sierra and Lapua bullets.
A .308 has a 51mm case; the .257R is based on the 7x57 case. Cartridge overall length is a consideration in the 788 magazine.

Those sound like 2 cool rifles!

Yeah, on the case length. From Chuckhawks: Here are some specifications of interest to reloaders: bullet diameter .264", maximum COL 2.800", maximum case length 2.035", trim to 2.025"

On the 308: From Nosler https://www.nosler.com/308-winchester Looks like tim length is 2.015" So difference is .010" between the 2 different cases.

Bolt is the same for a 308 and the Roberts. But the Roberts, being based off of the 7x57 case, really needs a longer action than the 788. 260 is a great cartridge though. I have a 700 VLS in it, shoots very well. I mostly use 140 and 142 gr bullets in mine. Quite accurate. - dan
 
.260 is a great choice maybe not as in style as the latest versions of 6.5mm but does everything just as well. Only real disadvantage is COL with the high BC projectiles if restricted to mag length. As mentioned 1:8 twist brings lots of versatility.

Why? It's another new 25 "wonder" round can't even find reloading data for it yet. I have a 25-06 so no need for another 25 calibre right now.

If I where to go with another 25 it would be something interesting, the the 25 souper or 257 bob...
 
Imo if you want to build a fast twist long ranger build it off a lh rem700. If you want a solid hunting gun, 308 7/08 etc, get the trigger done and carry on with the 788.
