Advice on the 260 remington

700 with a 20” bbl in a #2 or#3 profile barrel and stock by maker of choice would be be a pretty sweet handling rig.

.243 groove diameter is .243. .264 bore diameter is .256. So, in theory, a .243 barrel could be altered.

Let's say a take-off is $100. Couple of hundred to rethread, rebreech and set the headspace.
Not too many take-off .260 barrels.
Personally, I think a 788 is fine for a project if you are doing the work yourself. If you have to pay commercial rates, it is better to start with an action that is going to be more desirable when the project is finished.
788s have a lot of warts. Good features too, but still a lot of warts.
Of course, LH 700 actions don't grow on trees.
I'd leave the .308 788 as is, enjoy it that way.

For the extra dough just get a barrel made and spun onto your 788.
I did that and have an awesomely accurate .260 REM.

As some of you might know I was going to make a LH Remington 788 into a 25-08.

Dies and reamer are going to be a challenge to get though...

So I'm thinking of possibly chambering it to 260.

I have a Rem 260 in a M700 and I also have a 6.5 Creedmoor in a custom M7 The 6.5 CM allows a better balanced COAL with the 140 gr bullets
The 6.5 CM is a better designed cartridge then the REM 260 . So if it was me wanting a std 6.5 cartridge it would be a Creedmoor Also much more availability of factory ammo at better pricing then the 260 also if your not a handloader . JMO. RJ

Yessir - There is a 6.5 mm Benchmark barrel blank in the EE for 550$ asking... Slap that on a 788 action and watch it shoot!

HB/Varmint profile though. Not sure that was what the OP had in mind. I’ll agree it would probably shoot lights out though.

One of JC's barrels is about $450. Contoured, polished, stainless (no bluing required), ready to fit and crown.
