If not shipping by Canada Post, then who?

My last firearm through Canada Post they told me all firearms need to be done through small business accounts now. Of course you can do it without telling them what it is, but that does open you to a potential nightmare if things go bad. A tightly boxed pistol (12"x8"x6"-2.6kg) from Ont to Ab with age ID and no additional insurance was $39 at the lowest rate.

Last rifle I shipped cost $71, regular with proof of age. From ON to AB. I shipped it in the original cardboard box (covered), bolt removed, no trigger lock. Got to its owner with no issue.

CP is the only option, so if you don't like the price, too bad. Cost of doing business.

I wonder how much it would cost for me to drive it there myself? Realize how many hands it passes through to get to its final destination?

Total before taxes $67.10
GST $3.36

Shipment total $70.46

Are there any laws that require one to disclose a shipped item is a firearm?

Nope, you don’t have to disclose the contents. An agent can certainly ask if there’s dangerous goods or prohibited items in the parcel but firearms are neither of those so alls good with that.

You do have to ship firearms through Snap Ship at Canada Post though and this is something from their website;

Due to changes to our delivery process for COVID-19, all firearms must be shipped by Regular Parcel™ or Expedited Parcel™ and include the Proof of Age option. Consumers have to open a Solutions for Small Business account and create labels for shipping firearms using the online shipping tool, Snap Ship.

Please note: As the legal age for certain goods may differ from age of majority by province or territory, it’s your responsibility to make sure you select the right age under the Proof of Age option.

When you ship firearms, you must:

Unload the firearms. There can’t be any ammunition in the firearm or in the package (bullets, cartridges, and other ammunition are dangerous goods).
Attach a secure locking device to the firearms.
Lock the firearms in a sturdy, non-transparent container.
Remove the bolt or bolt carrier from any automatic firearms (if removable).
You can’t:

Ship firearms via air. Therefore, it is not permitted to send firearms to Air Stage offices and it is not permitted to ship firearms with Xpresspost and Priority services. For remote locations, For remote locations, see Air Stage offices listed in the Canada Postal Guide.
Have any markings on the outside of the firearm packaging
You’re solely responsible for meeting all government regulations.

I just mailed 2 rifles and a shotgun from NFLD to NWT. i took the actions out of the stocks. Bolt/screws etc in zip lock for each gun. Bubble wrapped each component. Used a double rifle case. Took out foam. Placed the pieces as efficiently as possible at the end of the case. Took a saw cut about 10" off end of case. Inserted piece of wood in open end. Drilled it in place. Closed case. Taped the living shyte out of it. Wrapped case in cardboard. Taped the shyte again out of it. Parcel with 3 guns (savage model 10 in 223 / Rem 700 in 7mm mag/ Mossy 500) with $1000 insurance and 24lbs weight it came to $88.

If only you could tape the CP employees sticky fingers, you'd be home free!

You best read the canada post act especially about non mailable matter which a firearm is
The ONLY way it can legally be shipped is as per their requirements and if they want could charge you big time for not doing so

Punishment

60 Every person who contravenes any provision of this Act or the regulations or who commits an offence under any of sections 48 to 59

(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years; or

(b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Not true they are classed as non mailable matter and a controlled item and you have to follow their requirements to mail 100% including saying what is in the package if asked
Item 3.3 firearms is on the non mailable matter list. Like why would one insure it if they lie about the contents knowing they have zero chances of winning a claim if the firearm gets damaged
In the end do as one pleases but don't cry when they stop shipping firearms from those not following the requirements. Don't think that can happen try to send one courier NOT. All of them no longer want or need our business and canada post is not far behind
Remember who owns them the government

Controlled items overview.
Tobacco and vaping products.
Firearms.
Intoxicating beverages.
Drugs and other controlled substances.
Medical or biological materials.
Perishable items.
Liquids, liquefiable substances, and powders.

As usual, you missed the point and replied to something that wasn’t said.

I’ll say it slowly for you as the previous poster asked if he had to disclose if the parcel contained a firearm.

As we’re talking about shipping a firearm by a person and not a business, it would be through Canada Post and more specifically Snap Ship, from Canada Post.

When you follow the protocols at Snap Ship, you don’t have to disclose the contents of what’s in the box when shipping a firearm…

If you think you do, please post a link…..

And a person shipping a firearm today is seen as a small business with canada post
IF you can read I said IF asked

I have been in the firearm industry since 1977 likely shipped more guns then most people have seen I have never been asked if it is a firearm in the box in fact for the last 20 years I have shipped out of a small town post office the employee all know me and know what I ship and receive no problem. All they ever ask is if it is dangerous good I tap no on the machine and that is the end of it . To all you complicators out there just shut your mouth mind your business and let things be

Yes you are. No dam wonder we are losing our firearms. Cannot even grasp canada post requirements for shipping them
As a yank I cannot believe you worked for the US army then again I don't know the position LOL

I think you might be getting senile in your old age… At no time did I ever mention I was in the US army.

What a bizarre supposition… :sok2. Are you ok?

Totally agreed… The new girl in our local PO will ask if it’s dangerous goods sometimes but that’s it…

You remind me of a slinky I had as a toy many years ago
Seemed complicated and fun for about 1 hour and then I figured it out and seen it was boring and a dumb toy
So like my slinky I am going to stop playing with you Now
