2022 Big Game Rifle

This year, my CZ 600 Alpha in 8x57 is getting the nod for inclement conditions.

My Brno Effect single shot in 308 will share duty as my woods stalking rifle. It's still with Wayne Doucette getting a first class final finishing. I don't feel worthy to have Wayne touch this rifle, but I won't complain either!

And, of course, I have about 15 other options in a plethora of 308 + calibres. :)

Rossi 92 44mag dropped a spring bear, single broadside shot with 240grain xtp. I’ll carry the same rifle and ammo for whitetail, if I don’t fill the tag with my crossbow first. No moose this year.

This will be my main rifle this year, a just finished semi-custom Mauser 98 in 9.3x62

This 275Rigby is the go-to gun now.

Both of those rifles are incredible. Beautiful heirloom tools.

I’ll be hunting with something a little more utilitarian than those this year. A customized Tikka T3x SL w/ Wildcat stock. Under 5.5 pounds bare tho, so that’s a nice upside. :)

Xbow for elk. I've been carrying the Chiappa Alaskan 44mag as a camp gun but this year I'll bring my wild west guns copilot that I bought back from the estate of a friend, colleague, hunting partner and fellow CGN member that left us this spring.

Otherwise, I'm hoping to set up the browning BLR SS takedown I am waiting to pick up from another member for deer/bear. If it's not setup on time I'll use my non-ss TD BLR in 358 win.

Sambar deer. primarily a Abolt 30-06 20 inch w 180gr
7mm-08 kimber montana 140gr woodleighs ALL rounder ALL deer ALL locations.

potter with ruger 1 303 and model 94 375 over summer.

CZ550 in 9.3x62 with PPU 286's at the moment, but hope to load up some 250 grain Accubonds at some point just to see how they shoot. Not sure how I am going to work this rifle into my rotation this fall, but hopefully a moose hunt is in the cards. For elk, it will be the usual .338 RUM with 250 grain LRX.

Nice. I'm hoping on taking my cz550 FS out for bear, but only in the spring so I guess that's 2023. That PRVI ammo used to be amazing value. Glad I stocked up.

Whatever I carry, almost guaranteed it will be somewhat different than last year.

Last year.....Ruger m77mkii 7x57 c 4-12 trophy or Rossi 44 mag carbine.

This year. I sold the leupold off my dad's last rifle, in the continued leupold purge. So new optic there. Two new to me rifles need optics, I have lots to choose from. Still have 5 Bushnell 3500 elite 3-9 I bought in clearance, Minor 2.5-10, Kahles 3-9, Nikon Bushmaster 4-14, B&l 1.5-6, Nikon 1-4.

Rifles that need optics
Tikka t3 3006 ?
Husqvarna 3006....Bushnell 3500 3-9
Whitworth(zastava m98) 3006 ?
Vanguard ii 240 wea....?
Xbolt 2506....?

Lots of playing, get at least two shooting decent. The 7x57 and something else. Probably a 3006 or the 25-06, since a big inspiration in trading down to it was I have found 10 boxes of factory ammo for it.

Hard to say. A lot of new guns followed me home this year. 6.5-300 Weatherby gets the first nod. 120gr TTSX clocking 3700fps for bears and elk. PRC’s and Kreed’s for the rest.

I use 270 win on all big game, 130 grain on whitetail/mulies and 150 grain on moose. I’ve never had a problem out to 200 yards on any animal to date.

I’ve been using the same 270win for 12 years:

Browning X-bolt with Leupold VX-II 3-9 X 40

I like 700s. Have a bunch that are keepers.

Just wanted something that was a nicer classic cuz I'm getting old.

i know how you like them and im pretty i hate them at the same level you love them ... not your fault but only of the issues i had when i was guiding ... maybe poor handling but i doubt when it was the same issue over and over. but your rifle is a beauty for sure. need some marks from hunting ...

Well I got to the range the other with the Mauser 98 my dad gave me last winter, I had some work done(double set trigger, new safety, new bolt handle and I redid the stock finish and installed a new pad! Worked up a load of 200 grain nosler accubond going out at about 2450fps and the thing made .8” group at 100m, even rang the steel plate at 200m on the first shot! I was impress to say the least! That is with an old Tasco 4x scope! I think it should work on moose inside 150m?!?!

I have a few I want to try out in the woods. Got a M10 Ross in .303 recently mounted scope, it is identical to the .280 sporting rifle. Also have to take a 95 Winchester in .35 Win complete with old Redfield 102 receiver sight for a walk. Got 60 rounds of Kynoch 250 roundnose loads for it. I'm a bit of a Fudd, I'm afraid.
