Sell me on a new cartridge.

Allow me to suggest something a bit different:

.17 WSM rimfire

Has the ~400 ft-lb muzzle energy of a centerfire pistol round and the 3000 ft/s speed of a 223 rifle round, but in a rimfire cartridge with flat-shooting lightweight bullet.

Very interesting round that fills a bit of a gap in my opinion, being rather quiet and flat shooting, and checking any legal requirements for rimfire use. It will be a fun one when the A17 WSM semi-auto is finally in stores with extended mags.

i got my popcorn, Awesome thread.....

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm- to me, You'r longing for a fast stepping 24-26 calibre, an i personally wouldnt stray into the new fandangles, however, to broaden ones horizon, perhaps the new fandangle rifles in said fandangle cartridge might tickle ya turkeys

The 'only' thing you need is a cartridge which would let you shoot a moose at 300-400 yards. Since you already have 308 caliber cartridges, it makes sense to get a 300 Win Mag since you can use the same bullets as in the 308 and the 30-06. All the rest, you got it already covered.

I agree with several of the posters here that I need a powerful cartridge to fill the top end above the 30-06. I've never taken an animal beyond 220 yards but it would be nice knowing in the future that it would be possible stretching out passed 400m.

I'm also interested in getting into more long range PRS type shooting, so a flat shooting low -recoil cartridge would be great. Is it worth grabbing 6.5 Creedmoor for this role since I already have 6.5x55 or should I consider something else entirely?

Im looking to expand my horizons in regards to my calibre selection. I currently own the following:

1. 22LR
2. .223/5.56
3. 9mm
4. .38/.357
5. 7.62x39
6. 6.5x55
7. .308
8. 30-06
9. 45-70
10. 12 gauge

I hunt everything in Ontario from small game , turkey, white tail and moose. I'm also interested in new rounds for plinking/long range.

What's a new calibre that I'm currently missing out on and why should I add it to the repertoire?

Interested to hear your thoughts.

You have it covered. Maybe top up your TFSA with the extra $$ burning a hole in your pocket? :)

I don't do PRS and don't remember what 6.5x55 you ended up choosing but my Tikka T3 X lite in 6.5x55 gives 0.3 moa consistently with 140 SST and RL22. IIRC the 6.5x55 was used for shooting competition in the Olympics a while back.

Well somebody's got to be that guy.

I say .40S&W. Haters gonna hate but I find it a challenge to shoot and I enjoy the snap.
.357 in my GP100 is a pussycat, but even with that heavy stippling on the M&P 2.0, I need to readjust my grip every two shots or so. Just knocks me loose.
The ammo used to be reasonable but like everything else, it's gone up significantly. And there is still the odd .40 still out there for sale if you want in.

Cheers
