Gunners, in your learned opinions, what is the best LPVO for the money? I'm shooting 5.56 Nato and .223 through an 18 inch barrel usually from 50m-200m, perhaps 300m occasionally. All target shooting.

I believe the power of the optics would vary from 1-4 times to 1-8 times?
 
RDSC has the Swampfox brand's Arrowhead 1-10x SFP LVPO for $769.00 - a great optic with excellent magnification range for a reasonable price. Good value for the money!

Valid question, but a hard one to answer. I'm finding that quality optics range from the $500 mark to the $5000 dollar mark. The problem is that aside from glass quality, I can't find a real difference between them quality wise? I shoot at 50m out to 200m usually and occasionally out to 300m.

glass quality will drop off at 1.4k and you won't really notice the difference. Once you hit that its all about reliability, turret accuracy, reticles, modularity, weight, eye relief etc.

If you can't answer these questions just buy ACOG (TA31 or TA56) W/ RMR mount as these are more than enough and are pretty much bomb proof.

Few towards the bottom of that range will be daylight visible illumination. Few towards the bottom of that range will work worth a damn at 1x treating them like a red dot. At the bottom of that price range you certainly won't get a FFP that you can reliably dial.

At the old prices of sub 1k a Steiner Px4i would be hard to beat for value, I dunno at 1200.

A lot of people give the Burris RT-6 a good review, it sounds to be one of the best down at that $500ish price point.

The drawbacks of 30mm bodies start to become apparent at 1-8 and 1-10, unless you need the high end I think the 1-6 versions are usually better to live with.

I recently bought one of these and am very impressed with it. Has a simple SFP reticle, very nice glass considering price and so far I have no complaints. My one somewhat minor gripe is the bezel on the illumination turret housing is thin and it was a bit of a pain to get it off to install the battery, the other is in cold weather it gets a bit stiff to turn the magnification up or down. But thinking about getting a second, IMO untouchable at the price point.
 
Primary Arms offer a lot of LPVO for the cash and they offer some pretty good / unique reticles (reticles are very personal and a big part of my decision when selecting any scope).

Sightron also offer some pretty good gear for the cash (they have a 1-7x) and their glass is excellent.
 
The top of the heap right now is the Vortex Razor Gen 3 1-10 but they are expensive. Same goes for the NF ATACR 1-8. Shooting to a max of 300m, both are probably overkill, depending on what size targets you're looking to shoot at and how important pid is to what you're doing. For "man size" targets, you can make do with a 1x red dot out to 300 if pid is of no consequence (ie shooting full size IPSC plates at the range). If you need to know what you're shooting at, then either a fixed 3x or 4x (with a red dot for close) or a 1-4 like the Steiner P4 becomes a much better proposition. If you want to have the capability of making more precise shots, you start needing more magnification, something like a Vortex Razor Gen 2 1-6 would probably be a good call.

Both Razors are excellent scopes but some reviews say that the 1-6x is a better package than the 1-10x all things considered (cost / glass etc) - one thing that is quite different about the two is that the 1-10x is FFP and the 1-6x is SFP.

Each have their strengths / weaknesses, I started with SFP scopes and moved to FFP which I now prefer. This is something anyone buying this style of scope should consider based on their usage.

If we're gonna talk $4000 LPVO's, we ought not overlook the sensible middle-ground carved out by the Eotech Vudu 1-10x at right around $2K. The FFP "evolving reticle" that gradually morphs from Circle-Dot to simplified Precison Xmas-Tree is excellent for both CQB and long-range work. The glass is as good as I've seen on any other scope, to include my $4K Razor HD2 and Leupold Mk5. There is lots to like, very little that disappoints and nothing that annoys with the Vudu -10x. If you have the $$ definitely check it out as the FFP entry-point into the FFP 1-10x LPVO world. It is a very impressive optic, and I have extreme difficulty imagining that the Vortex offering is worth double the cost of the EoTech.

I've hated just about every LPVO I've tried except the Bushnell AR 1-4 FFP, specifically the .300 BO reticle. I can't explain why but I just love these things, though it probably helps that I got them for a bargain. That being said my preferred setup for semi-auto non-precision work is still a fixed 3 or 4x and an offset red dot.

The 1-6 might be a better value, it kinda depends on what kind of capability you're looking for (ie whether or not you need the extra top end of the 1-10).

It makes sense for a 1-6 (and below) to be SFP, imo, as you're more likely to be on 1x or 6x and the odd time you're in between you probably won't be handicapped by the subtensions not being "true". You don't "need" FFP for a 6x and below optic and it's less expensive to manufacture a SFP optic, I believe.

When using a 1-10, you're much more likely to be using the magnification in between 1x and full power so it makes sense to be FFP so that all your subtensions are correct, regardless of magnification level.

I don't have any experience with the Vudu but have played around with it's bigger brother (the 5-25) and it was nice. I expect Eotech to put out a quality scope so it's no surprise you like it. I'll probably end up trying one out if our despicable overlords somehow don't ban all the rifles suitable for a 1-10...

Did you get the LE or SR5?

Not sure which one I want. I think I'm leaning toward the LE.

Not that itll matter if/when the bans come in. Competitions are in jeopardy because of insane people in parliament.
