Earlier this summer I walked into a local gun shop to see a 1963 Model 700 6mm Rem carbine sitting there. The stock was broke at the wrist and poorly repaired. But the price was right at 250$ so it came home with me. A receiver notched, matte top, tombstone safety short action.
Also, I had bought a bunch of the Hornady 53 gr Vmax to try in my 223/222 but these bullets are long, and I didn't have the twist or the speed to get them to work properly. So the idea came about to use them and the old short action receiver in a 22-250 build.
I found a nice Benchmark 10 twist Rem varmint contour barrel, cut it to 23.5". And had a nice Model 700 BDL Varmint Special stock in the closet. Rempel pieced it all together. Picked it up last night, shot it tonight, looks to have some promise.
37.5 gr D4895 WW brass 10 thou off the lands, 3850 fps looked exceptional until I fired the fourth shot. Will keep at it.
This bullet, at this speed, 2" high at 100 is hold on fur to 400 yards slightly bettering the 40 vmax 223 trajectory I like to kill coyotes with. It will be interesting to see where this gun takes me.

In all seriousness, nice rifle. I like those old 700s a lot, fond memories as a kid my dad has an early 60s 20” 243.

Looks like a fabulous project. I’m impressed how there are so many gunsmiths out there who know/have the experience to make a Remmy 700 shoot really well.

Great work! Thanks for sharing!!

Cheers, Barney

I’m not sure there’s much of a difference other then the price of brass and a new set of dies.

Seems the 22 CM is reinventing the 22-243 Middlestead, so it will likely be a little faster than the 22-250. About par with the 22-250 AI. That's a good looking riflein the OP, and in a very useful coyote cartridge. - dan

Thanks guys,
The 22CM has 52 gr H20 capacity (Google)
22/250 W-W has 46 gr
22 BR R-P 36 gr
223 Lapua 31 gr

As the cases grow you are seeing diminishing returns in speed for the powder your using. But more speed is always good.

Thanks.
The Berger Stability calculator shows a SG of just over 1 with the 53 gr Vmax out of a 12T, indicating very marginal stability . It improves to 1.6 with a 10T.

Here are the bullets beside one another
40 Vmax, 50 Vmax, 53 Vmax, 55 Hor SP, 70 Berger VLD, 75 Berger VLD

Very nice rifle... smart repurposing of that rifle. I like the /250 case alot... less in .25 cal, but it is one of the .22 cals that I regularly shoot at the range and in the field for coyotes. Leave the badgers alone with this one. ;)

That's a great deal at $250. It's probably worth almost twice that even with the broken stock.

Either way, that's a nice old school project in a VG chambering. Well done overall.
