A 22-250 Remington

One could have just found another factory stock and had a nice 6mm. :)

A short action model 700 has endless possibilities. I used to shoot a lot of 6mm Rem and have a few around still. Ruger, Remington and a Winchester that are underutilized. Varmint guns are my latest kick. As good as the 6rem is at killing varmints it’s almost more of a deer gun.

Interesting. I stumbled into a bunch of 52gr AMAX to try in a little 12 twist 223 model 7 of my dads. I’m sure they’re similar to the 53 vmax and I’m hoping they will stabilize. Guess there’s only one way to find out.

Thanks.
The Berger Stability calculator shows a SG of just over 1 with the 53 gr Vmax out of a 12T, indicating very marginal stability . It improves to 1.6 with a 10T.

Here are the bullets beside one another
40 Vmax, 50 Vmax, 53 Vmax, 55 Hor SP, 70 Berger VLD, 75 Berger VLD

Yes I tried the 53 vmax in my 12T 222 and a 12T factory Rem 223 and they didn’t group very well. But I didn’t play with them. I just moved on to the 40 vmax which was relatively easy to tune at big speeds 3700/3850 fps.

Very cool project! I would send myself to the poor house buying 250$ Remingtons. I’ve been thinking hard about a 22/250 lately as well. I’ve got oodles of Varget and 4895 around and when everyone is sold out of 6mm projectiles there seems to always be .224 stuff in stock. Your post is not helping me hold back.

On a side note has anyone shot the 50/55 gr class of bullets from a 22-250 with an 1-8” twist barrel, I would like one to be flexible but don’t want too much of a good thing.

I don’t have a real fast twist 22/250 to shoot light bullets out of. 50’s work fine in a 223 8T. Tod Bartel built a 7.5T 22 Creedmoor. I wonder if he shot light bullets out of it and how they performed? I remember lots of 75+ gr bug hole pics in his thread.

Very nice, I love the classic BDL from years gone by. I have a 1-8 twist 22-250 barrel here from IBI for my Tikka, I only shot a few rounds from it, it was okay but not stellar. I will spin it back on and play some more, but currently I have a 1-8 twist 243 barrel on that one and it is shooting lights out so it may be a while before I feel the need to swap them out again.

You have some fine firearms sir, really enjoyed your 222 thread as well!

Thanks guys. Hopefully I’ll fill this thread with some winter varmint pics too.
I need to build a 40vmax load for this rifle in case the 53 gets too gory.
I’m also concerned about the noise of the 22/250 over my 223. My ears are shot and even though I hate wearing hearing protection hunting I’ve started to push a plug in if there’s time.

Yes RJ
I think I made a mistake using D4895. It’s great powder but leaves a lot of carbon in the bore, which might not be ideal for 22 cal. Should have used H4895 or varget. Will go back at it when I get a chance. In the meantime I’ve got it shooting my D4895 load about half inch. See if I can find something to kill with it this week.

So that didn’t take long.
Out for a drive scouting deer but for some reason I’m looking for varmints...
Coyote mousing at 400 yards in stubble. Perfect. Park. Walk. Set up. 250 yards. Down he goes.
Back to the truck since it’s closer, drive in there. At 50 yards he gets up and skidattles. Well that’s not how it’s supposed to go. Hmmm
Drive another half mile. Badger long ways out in the pasture. Park. Walk. About same distance. He didn’t get away.

That wasn't on the agenda....
