Type 81 SR Serious Quality Concern

They will have to make the stock longer then and bring it all the way to the trigger guard

They cant really, the wood already travels about as far as it can go... so much so that they had to cut the bottom corner of the safety plate off to make room for the wood.

Talk about a poor design right from the outset! This makes me very happy that I did not impulse buy one of these. How very unfortunate....

Its nice to have variety but holy hell, the 180 designs and ar10's made by canadian manufacturers have been total flops. Its like they put a box of ammo through it and call it good

SVD's like the NDM-86 I suspect have a much more elaborate rear trunnion then the Type 81 SR. IMO theres little to no design similarity's between the 2 stocks outside of the overall visual concept. Whats on the SR is very much proprietary and what the SR may very well need is a hole and lag bolt passing thru the rear trunnion down into the meat of the pistol grip. Its well enough fixed in place to handle all the other force vectors IMO. It just needs reinforcement for this final one.

Agreed.

Unfortunately , there does seem to be some issues or teething problems with some of these rifles . Maybe that is why SKSs have remained popular , and have surged in price in the last 2 or 3 years as you can beat them around , and they still go bang every time .

as said before the t81 folder has not an issue ... we ll see about the problem with the sr81. it is a shame but a solution will be found im pretty sure.

As a 81 sr owner. This is concerning.

I just took my top cover off to inspect how the stock is attached. Sure enough, it looks like just the two cross pins. There isn’t even a lot of wood on the receiver side surrounding the pins.

From the outside of the rifle I felt sure that the four rivets at the back top of the receiver added strength. It doesn’t look like that is the case.

Yikes.

Mine will be a wall hanger until I either know it won’t break, or a solution is found.

I have always thought the same thing.
The SKS is a better built Rifle for sure.
The 81 is lip stick on a pig.

The sks is a tank no doubt, these are stamped though and a heavy stamping at that, itll survive a long time just like an abused ak in africa. As for fitting an svd stock good luck lol still missing the mounting through the bottom of the grip like an svd has. If it were me Id put a stock tang where the pistol grip screw rivet is and secure it that way.

Definitely going to need some kind of reinforcement. Here’s a vid showing it in better detail.

Thanks for posting that and it seems to be awful design on the dragu stock having ?2mm of wood in front of where it's fixed by a pin. Shoot, this worries me, when I get mine I think I'll reinforce with epoxy and a metal washer around where the stock bolts pass through to prevent breakage like the first unfortunate fellow experienced=\

That’s not a bad idea; maybe a metal plate/ washer on the inside of the receiver with a bolt running down through the stock.

I’ll wait for someone smarter/ handier then me to try it.

This isn’t good news to hear
I did order one of these but haven’t got it yet
Hopefully TI can come up with a solution maybe they can offer us a steel reinforced fiberglass stock or something

Well as simple as I wanted to makes this all I did in preventative measure was put a simple 1" brass wood screw thru the perfect fit hole just behind the recoil spring:

I'm more then confident now this will take any unnecessary stress or flex off of those 2 bottom roll pins.

Was this unnecessary, YES. Should we have to do anything like this, NO.
This was an oversight on TI and the designers. Nit their fault but hopefully everyone who purchased these rifles will
A) either get a replacement stock JIC
or
B) they have a remedy from the factory for all of us buyers.

Until then I'll continue to play with and use this rifle without any worry

Did you just void your warranty? Might want to check with TI before recommending this as a widespread "fix" for the problem....

bhahahhahahahahahhaha

:-( _ _ _

But hey Tha ks for your input to help alleviate the situation. Good on ya!!!

I don't have a dog in this particular fight, just looking out for the best interests of those new to the hobby who may be tempted to follow your example. Warranty service may be dependant upon your tampering with the problem part. Do you know for sure that you have NOT compromised your warranty? If TI is looking to limit their exposure, they may look for reasons to deny warranty coverage. Just saying. Hopefully they won't take such a petty approach, but who knows at this point?

What warranty?

LOL.

Have you tried to get anything from a dealer or distributor when your new gun is defect? I tried and the usual answer is to contact the manufacturer. Fix it yourself is usual the least painful way.

Does somebody have the Norinco phone number handy?
