Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Question for the boys but especially Murray:

Have people who have removed the grenade launcher noticed a change to accuracy? I saw Murray's video and noticed accuracy was a little down, but there were other externalities present. Have others ameliorated those issues to see if the grenade launcher is in fact responsible for any accuracy?

Sharing this info is very helpful for those who have an interest in these firearms and may help them decide whether or not to acquire the gun. I know Murray said in the video he didn't think accuracy was down but more time has passed and I'd like to hear more.

2 Type 81sa's and a SKS. Which ones the best? I have my predictions but only more shooting will tell.

What is already certain is that the ergos on the SKS are notably better. And it as pictured is a $1000 cheaper. This verdict of course isnt really fair cus the SKS is highly customized, the stock carved to fit my shooting posture perfectly. But at the same time one can argue having more disposable income to put into modding a rifle because of its substantially lower base price offers advantages like this.

The LMG Tabuk clone and SR honestly feel about the same. The Tabuk naturally is more robust in terms of furniture. The slightly lower stock comb on the Tabuk offers a more comfortable sight picture. The SR setup is good enough but I also feel the sight picture would be better if its stock comb was about 1 cm lower. Havent shot the SR yet and have barely any rounds thru the Tabuk still.

Deer season is approaching, so that should naturally push me out into the woods to finally do some shooting in the coming months.

cant wait to see your report.

the tabuk project is really an interesting one that should go in production in a way or another ...

Disclaimer: I haven't been able to get out and shoot the rifle since I've gotten it, so haven't tested this yet.

I figured since there doesn't really seem to be anyone actually making a brass deflector for these yet that I would try my hand at it. This is just a quick proof on concept and to make sure I actually had the measurements right before getting to fancy with anything.

The plan is to use the holes already in the rear sight block. There's probably a better spot to mount this, but I hate doing anything to stuff that isn't easily reversible, so I want to avoid drilling any extra holes.
The bottom hole where there's usually a rivet in the carry handle is going to be used as to stop the deflector from rotating and the screw hole for the carry handle is going to be the spot I used to actually secure the thing to the rifle. The only catch now is going to be finding some M5x.05 screws to actually mount it since I don't have one I can steal from a carry handle.

I'm probably going to make some changes to this. The first is making the impact spot about 25mm longer to ensure the scope tube is fully protected, the second is making the section between the rivet and screw hole a bit wider, I didn't realize I would have so much clearance there.

Out side of that, I think it'd just need some testing. I just need to find a spot near Winnipeg that I can take the rifle out to. Moved here last year but only just recently starting finding some free time to enjoy the sport again.

That is a very clever solution! There is another option on the market, vz58rifle.com sells POSP shell deflectors. But I think yours in metal form will have a lot of potential.

I'm so glad you said where you found that one at. I spotted it in one of your videos, but I couldn't find where/what is was.
It sucks that you needs to remove some material from the mount in order to have it fit the rifle properly though, but still cool regardless.

Right now I only have PETG for filament, I was looking into making these in ABS since it has a higher melting point (105c VS 85c) and is generally more durable. If I could get these made in metal though that would be amazing and for sure something I'll look into a bit more.

I do agree though, I feel like these in metal would have some potential. Specially because it wouldn't require modifying the rifle or the optic mount at all.

You remove metal from the deflector not the mount haha. But ya, you should look into getting the pieces lazer cut from sheet metal if the 3D print proves not adequate over time. They would only cost a couple bucks per unit to lazer cut.

Ooookay, I clearly read that wrong. I was surprised people would be so willing to shave down a mount, removing it from the deflector makes way more sense. Haha

I’ll see what I can get away with for 3D printing for now, partially out of curiosity.

I think if enough people end up being interested, I’ll put some serious effort into seeing what I could get made up around the city.

Hey Murray I hate asking again, but I think my q got lost in the weeds. Have you noticed a change in accuracy over time by removing the grenade attachment? I watched your video but I figured I'd ask after like 4 years of further learnings by you.

I ended up putting it back on not long after that, mostly for aesthetics, and the provide a shoulder for the brake to butt up against. I havent benched the rifle since.

Man as much as I like the SVD style, the Tabuk has its own charm too. I don't know what it is, perhaps the urge to own them all?

Also, does anyone know the specs for the handguard screw? I'd like to replace mine if possible, with a hex head or something.

Just for those wondering, the rear sight base seems to work well for mounting a low profile rail and a micro red dot. I machined this little guy and just used the existing pin to lock it in.

It seems very solid, and I can get an alright cheek weld looking down the top of the rail. Just waiting to get a primary arms rs-10 and I'll post a picture down the sights.

Hi, how do I remove the pin ? I tried tapping it out but it no luck.

If you search “type 81” on the combat footage subreddit a few videos show up of them being used in combat
