2022 Waterfowl thread

Spank, is that your twin in the last photo you posted?

Hahaha! No that is a buddy of mine from Iroquois Falls, Ont. He has been here with his son hunting with me since Oct 5th for his first ever AB waterfowling experience and first time we've been able to get together on a hunt since 1997! He is headed home on the 22nd. He does taxidermy for himself and has been able to collect a number of nice birds for some winter projects. I put them onto their first ever Specks, plumed Gadwalls, plumed Greenwings, Spoonies and a few others. I found two great feeds of Canvasbacks today and they are set up this afternoon hoping to shoot their first plumed Bull Cans and Redheads! Here are a few pics from the last two hunts.

Well the boys never got the Cans they were seeking but they shot a handful of Spoonies including one that was almost fully plumed which was another bucket list duck for them. They said that one was close enough for now and were taking it home to mount as a winter project. We wrapped up the morning with a final Snow Goose hunt before they chased the ducks on water that afternoon. They headed home the next morning and I've been going out for a little much needed solo time after the few stragglers kicking around with the cold temps freezing sloughs overnight and pushing birds south.

We are winding down getting ready for the rifle deer season but we got a couple more hunts in before setting out deer blinds. Hopefully we can fill a couple deer tags quickly and find a good duck shoot before the birds are gone for the season. Love shooting those big greenies!

Decided to check out this lunar eclipse so went for a solo hunt in my favourite public land marsh.

Very nice! Where is the snow? Lol

This neck of the woods is supposed to get the first snowfall this weekend. We are breaking records temps here in Nov. I think it was 25C in Toronto a few days ago. I'll allow it, this spot I hunted is small water and wont take much to freeze. Though, not sure the deer hunters this week want temps to stay this warm. Once things start freezing I'll begin to spend more time in the grouse woods.

Hit the marsh again this morning for a short hunt. The full moon was so bright, it was a very early flight had woodies and mallards splashing around in my decoys way before legal. Didn't bother another person in the distance as they took their first shot around 15min before legal. Made everything in my spread lift off..

Managed to get a pair of mallards.

Nice greenie! Have to love when someone shoots well before legal time!

The ducks have finally shown up in numbers in the Fraser Valley.
I managed to Limit out on Mallards on Tuesday in about an hour and yesterday My neighbour and I got 14 mallards, a widgeon, a pintail, and one lesser Canada in about 2 hours.
Sorry no pictures. I have to figure that out.

Looks like my season may have come to a close. Weather took a turn for the sh!t and getting in and out of the lake becomes challenging. Lots of birds this morning which is always a nice way to close out the year.

Now the attention turns to upland birds in the bush with a 6lbs SxS.

The paddle into the marsh was fine, but by end of the hunt I was breaking ice on the paddle out. Later that day snow smacked the area and is here to stay. I'm not ready to stop waterfowling, but it may be time. May try to hit some big water, otherwise grouse it is for me too. Hopefully the snow in the grouse woods isn't too deep.

My season ends when they leave or rifle deer season starts, whichever comes first. Fortunately I can hunt dry fields all season. My water decoys have sat for years unused. I sold the last of my mallard floaters a few weeks ago. All I have left is a half dozen can & redhead floaters that have never seen water or been strung. A buddy of mine wants them so they are headed down the road next time he comes through. I honestly do not miss hunting water.

I enjoy hunting water….but on days like today when you’re breaking ice, its also breaking balls. It was an adventure getting the boat out of the water. Im surprised I was successful in doing so. Otherwise, I would have had to break another CGN’rs balls too…
