Glut of hunting rifles for sale on EE... wonder what % actually sell?

The EE is a platform to sell firearms for firearms enthusiasts... I assume that is all of us... ergo it is a GOOD thing. As far as quality and "surprises" go, if you can read and comprehend and then ask the right questions, the risks are very low, I would trust business this way over an Amazon description on a new product. How many sell? 100% of what I have listed has sold, and I have likely bought more than my share. Remember, gun nutters are constantly trying new (to them) stuff... new platforms, new cartridges, new calibers we trade and sell back and forth. Many times, I have sold a rifle to some fine CGNer only to buy it back from them sometime later. I remember one rifle that I sold and then bought back, and then sold again and bought back again! I tend to not be terribly interested in firearms that can be purchased by anyone walking into their local gunshop. I prefer rarer, no longer in production pieces, and unique pieces, either for the platform or the cartridge... you can't get that from Cabelas. All-in-all, the EE is a great place to shop and I have met some fine, trustworthy gun enthusiasts and quality outdoorsmen through trading there. I can name many off the top of my head, folks that are fair and reasonable and honest, that I have done multiple deals with over the years.

Same here, not that I bought lots but the few I did where better than expected and the sellers were good honest people!!
As for price I think it’s all over the place but not worst than some sponsors here in there consignment/used section of there webpage, most of them have stuff that is quite a bit over priced IMO… but then again I don’t have to buy it and if someone really wants it then good for them, after all the right price is the price that someone is willing to pay!!

Same here - all the good deals I bought and sold are within the 1st 20 mins or so ... and I delete the add. Most people pay within the hour ...

You mostly see all the adds that folks are asking way too much 4 sure ...

Some rifles sell in minutes, as they are models in higher demand. You might not even notice them come and go on the EE. Some can take a month to sell as they might be a not so popular caliber or very common. Others sit forever as they are either priced too high or simply a rifle nobody wants. I also see lots of ads with multiple rifles for sale and when you view them, 2 or 3 out of 5 might sold, but the ad is still up for the remaining.

Just to ad to HCs post quoted below

If a prospective buyer or seller takes the time to review the other parties feedback score both received and sent you’ll quickly get a sense of who your dealing with.

Feedback score is not mandatory here, but it is a nice way to completely finish off the transaction once delivered and speaks volumes of the members character you just dealt with.

The two things that irk me about the EE are;

1- members asking for photos to verify your wares (which I have no issues with sending) either via email or text and then not following up with a simple “no thanks or I’m going to pass at this time”. It’s that simple. I don’t need to know why your passing up on it, that’s your biz. But I’ve had instances where I’ve moved on after a 48hr waiting period and then get a PM asking why I sold the item as the were first inline? Uhmm, I gave you a chance, 2 days worth actually & I didn't hear back so I moved on to someone who was willing to commit 100%.

2 - ridiculously low offers by members who think that a member is desperate on their sale because the ad is there and hasn’t read the typical lowballers will be ignored clause. Like upwards of 50% lower then the asking price. Seriously? Your gonna be that person who ties up an unnecessary PM & inbox with that nonsense?

Which brings me to my last point

I always let people know where they stand in line if I have multiple PMs on an item and then follow up with each individual letting them know if they’re up or the item has been sold.

It’s really that simple folks. But hey.. as been said the EE can be entertaining at times.

As to the OPs original post? Yes the Soup du Jour seems to be 6.5Needmores, 7mmRM and the ever-present Marlin 45-70s’ lately

I've bought and sold a bunch of firearms on the EE. No significant problems with either activity. As others mentioned, good deals happen quite quickly, overpriced or poorly described items don't sell quickly or at all. I've had to return a total of three firearms for refunds because of undisclosed problems, but that's the worst that has happened over several dozen deals.
One thing I insist on is the seller give me their full name, address and phone number in addition to an email address to send an EMT to. It is surprising how some people think we should agree to send money to some anonymous email address or phone number without sharing the rest of their contact information. A couple have balked at my request, so I don't do business with them.

The only thing that bothers me, is the optics on a rifle for sale.
I might be interested in the rifle, but a $1000 gun with a $200 scope is not worth $1200.
I will throw out the scope.
Or a $2000 gun with a $1300 scope, the add said package only.
I have bought and sold lots of guns on here, and when I list a gun with a scope, I give options
Package price
Rifle price
reloading package price
scope price.
Then a prospective buyer can choose what he wants to buy.
Lots of overpriced stuff on EE, and thats fine, I just look and move on.
I ask for pictures when there are none, but lets look at say a Remington BDL(which I like) some are dark stocks, some are light, some have wood figure, some depending on the era they were built in have different checkering, and lets say I am only interested in a dark walnut stock, with skip line checkering, the pictures tell me if I am going to make a offer on the rifle, or put the pictures in my garbage bin.
And I agree that most adds are terrible for not enough info.

Having been part of the CGN community for almost 20 years, I’ve seen prices increase over the years, but then again, what hasn’t gone up in cost. I’ve sold everything I’ve listed on this site or perhaps another forum, but I don’t have any items sitting in my closet because they didn’t sell. No pictures....get the seller to send you some. And ask many questions to ensure you have all the correct info. And if you think an item is over priced, make an offer. Worst case scenario is you get ignored or receive a “no thanks” or a counter offer. But some of the members make an offer and then don’t follow through....rude. A guy a few weeks back made an offer which I accepted and then nothing? When I sent him a polite PM he replied that he was just testing me to see what I would take as the rifle would be for his son. The guy had no rating so I guess that explains that.

Anyway, I love the EE. Great candy store for the nutters like me out there. Some deals to be had, some over-priced, but that’s how the buy and sell forums work. I’ll continue to buy some, sell some and enjoy the process.

Personaly i have bought mamy rifles here, without any problem so far.

As for sale, you must ask wayyyyy under real price.if you want to sell. Think i bought around 50/60 rifles here, maybe sold 2 or 3 max. People here are looking for crazy deals or rare/hard to find rifle. Regular rifle for regular price will sell elsewhere.

Still amaze me why i keep loosing my time posting on EE

One of the benefits of not being able to post pics, is that the seller avoids the time wastin', window shoppin' tire kickers.

A serious buyer knows what he wants, and what it looks like by the description. And Google is his best friend.

Pics to e-mail.

I've often wondered why sellers often post ads for guns without pictures. It's easy to post pics on this forum. A few pictures reduce the possibility of misunderstandings. It just seems easier to me--and adds to the likelihood of a sale--to put up some good informative pictures with the ad instead of having to do so every time a potential buyer asks for them. I tend to ignore ads with minimal descriptive information and no pictures. Why force potential buyers to ask for more information and pictures when this can be done in the original ad?

A lot of our members are elderly and do not know how to host pictures

It also weeds out those who are not interested enough to take the small amount of effort required to ask for pictures, and allows you to provide pictures of what they are interested in specifically. It gives you their contact info etc as well if the deal proceeds, which is a benefit for buyers

I've got a bunch in my subscribed threads that I check on once in a while to see if the price comes down or if it sells or not, but I don't buy too many on here. Lots more buying/selling on ####### since the design is a bit friendlier to post pictures for most (I just use IMGUR to host the pictures I link on here but not everyone can do that). Although with the last few transactions being crap, I'm pretty much done with anyone I can't meet face-to-face.

I expect there's probably a lot of guns that are being sold as a "package" where no one wants the crap glass mounted on the rifle that ends up being listed for a while. Or just expensive guns in general, $2,000 is a lot of money these days when prices on everything else are going bonkers, even if it is a smoking deal on a near-new Sako or something.

Post a rifle at a reasonable price (with pictures), leave a bit of margin to haggle, and put the scope up for sale separately in the Optics thread and I'm sure your gun will sell.

The way I look at it if no pics & that bothers a person then they are either not really interested or are not serious anyway. To weed them out is great. Too many on here just window shopping & #####ing. If you don't like the price move on or make an offer. If people spent more time doing something productive rather than spend their life #####ing it would be a nicer world.

I'm still scratching my head as to why some guys are asking more for a used gun than what you can get a new one for.

$800 for an SKS? Really?

i guess it depends on the sks. chinese ones are going for $600+ at cabelas (granted). i just sold two russians to one guy for $1450, in the box since bought. have an almost all matching one up now for $800, will i get that, who knows but i won't worry if it doesn't sell. it's a nice rifle. the days of the $200 or 300 sks's are over...

Sold all but two I put up in the EE, was probably asking a hair much for them, but now, 3-4 yrs later, it's a pretty good price, so, may put them back up again. The bulk of my guns or scopes are old enough that I have sold them for what I paid for them, made some loot on some, and if wanted, I toss in brass and dies and what loads I've tried in them. I always put up pics, as I tend to ignore posts without pics. I can't complain on my experience on EE. Biggest issue is usually sorting out who was in what order on the "I'll take it" list.

I love trying new guns, I buy one or two each season, use them to harvest a couple animals and then sell them.. never seems to hurt too much, couple hundred bucks spent at the end of the day and I get to shoot something new every year.

I’ve listed 18-20 guns on here and the longest any has sat is two weeks.

I dump everything that is newer at my local gun plumber on consignment. I use to like the EE when CGN was smaller, now it's too much of a pain in the ass. Soon as something is listed, 40 lowball offers even if it's priced fair. Shipping prices are nuts, shipping rules are nuts with CP, helps keep my Smith in business selling local, and they sell there for fair prices.

This is true enough. If I’m interested enough I’ll make time to get pics texted or emailed to me. I know what I want and when I want it I’ll do the legwork to get it. As for the EE, plenty of good deals to be had, you just have to know what you want and move on it when they come up! The overpriced stuff just sits.
