Can the 30-06 show enough might to drop moose.

Jeez, I can't believe how many people here have the audacity to mention the lowly 30-06 in the same sentance as the mighty 300WM......

.30-06 & .300 Win Mag

When I hunted zee mooses my main rifle was a Browning A-bolt composite stalker .300 Win Mag with a B&L Elite 4000 3.5-10x40mm. Back up was a Winchester Model 70 XTR .30-06 with 24" barrel topped with a B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40mm. Still have both rifles in case zee mooses beckon yet again... :D

People dont know what they are talking about. Swamp donkys are EASY to kill hit them in the boiler room and they are going down quick! You only need cheepy walmart specal 180 gr 30/06 bullets to hunt moose.

Not so fast. Our group lost one after 6 hours of tracking - blood trail disappeared. Found it the next day (follow the ravens) - it took 4 .308's to the chest and kept on truckin'. What was different about this big guy... he was already running when he was hit.

Why take a chance on cheap ammo, that will work if no bone is hit, if shooting factory ammo one could spend a whole $15-$20 more and buy good quality ammo with plenty of peretration for all angles.
moose are different critters in august then they are in sept/oct. a big bull in full rut, is as tough as any critter.

a good lower priced factory load that performs well would be the Federal Fusion bonded core soft points. Ive heard good things from them, and I have shot them in a few rifles and their accuracy has been great.

Something is wrong with this story. No moose can take 4 308 bullets to the "chest" and keep going! What do you call his chest? I will stick my neck out and bet that no bullet hit his lungs! If four bullets hit back of the diaphram it will keep going, regular or "premium" bullet. One bullet, 30-30 or larger, in the lungs equal dead a moose. Maybe you could give more information.

Chest is anything ahead of the diaphragm - what the French guys call "le coffre". I assume the colloquial translation to be "boiler room". 4 holes all going through this area. Missing one lung, at least.

No detailed autopsy as the "caustic" nature of the stomach acids had already ruined the rear quarters and were working away on the front. Our hunt was over and we went home empty-handed.

Although I may be reading more into your post than you intended, I'm going to err on the side of not giving a sh!t and say that I don't appreciate being called a liar. I would also recommend that you not profess what a moose can and cannot do, since, on this particular issue at least, you are quite mistaken.

H4831, How many moose have you shot in your day? I have seen a few moose well hit a few times run for over 250 yds in heavy bush, it didnt have any lungs left and i took 3 hr to find him where he finnaly pile up

Probably more than most on this board, and myself and him combined, means quite a few. I have a hard time seeing 4 well placed .308 bullets letting a moose run around for 6 hours. Sorry man, 250 yds, yes, 6 hours, no.

I apologize for my inability to make it any clearer to you. Believe what you will.

I can't believe that this post is still going. A .30-06 WILL kill a moose any day of the week, with any 165-180 grain bullet inside 500 yards. At 400 yards the 180 grain still has more energy than the .30-30 170grain @ 100 yards. The .30-30 surely has slain more moose inside 100 yards than any other calibre known to man. Put it in the right spot and the animal dies. Period.

Yup, well said. LR

If those 4 bullets went a little further back in to the stomach/guts or only taking out one lung, it would end up going for 6 hours. It's critical to take out both lungs or the heart. Some profess shooting into the hump which takes out the shoulder and backbone for an instant dead pile up.

rem 338 , did i say 6 hr?? no i said 3hr, i dont know where you hunt but the bush is very thick where i go and i am sure he did live most of the 3 hr it took to find him
