Who is looking forward to spring gobbler chasing? With the bad weather cutting the end of my deer season short and the current rain stopping coyote hunting right now turkeys seem to be on my mind.
I got a new 1301 comp to try out. Debating whether I want to run a lpvo or reddot or go as is with the bead. Muzzleloader or 20ga for a second bird
 
Hah... 6th of January and already a spring hunt thread.
It is also on my mind, been hunting some new toys for this spring, perhaps an electronic caller since my slate caller always seems to fail at the worse times.
I am thinking about heading to a reserve for some boar hunting, just to get it out of my system.

You can use electronic calls in your area? Ontario is behind the times on turkey hunting.
But yes it's early but hey there ain't much going on right now
 
:d:kickInTheNuts::kickInTheNuts::(Winters in Southern Ontario really suck azz lately. So tired of the rain and mud and dreary days. Almost 4 months until turkey time. Jesus thinking about de-wintering the Lund and jigging the SCR for walleye For cryin out loud. No ice for fishing, no snow for tracking or calling coyotes. It’s and mud bowl in the fields so no walking fence rows for bunnies. Antler shed season is still 6-7 weeks away. I’m depressed.:(:(
 
I just go done sighting in my new turkey gun. Charles Daly 601 2x-7x scope 18.5" barrel with a Carlsons longbeard choke with 3" XR#5s. The patterns is deadly out to 50 yards if need be. All I need now is a sling, it's hard carrying a blind and 20+ lb turkey plus gun in 1 hand!

Glad I'm not the only one. I screwed my knee up again and I'm fearful of walking thru muddy fields and making it worse

My past two seasons were duds as well. I purchased a larger blind and more comfortable chair to make it a bit more enjoyable for next season.
Quebec allows electronic callers for wild turkey, so I may give that a try this year. I am also thinking (if the snow is gone on time) to bring my brush cutter and clear my hunting spot to make it more attractive for the turkey to stop by there, perhaps even bait if it is more than 1 month prior to the start of hunting season. Not sure about the rest of Canada, but our hunts only go from 30 minutes before sunrise until 12:00 noon. There is not much choice but to go out very early and stop by lunch time. We also have a mandatory registration in person, so anything caught needs to be brought to a registration station before cleaning the bird. All these rules make it a bit more of a PITA.
 
Ontario allows 2 tags per hunter. No check stations and hunt times at 1/2 hr before sunrise until 7pm. Used to be until noon which sucks because gobblers that answer between 12pm and 3pm are usually as good as dead.
 
I rarely see any activity in my area before noon. The action usually starts after lunch. In fact, I often come back from a 6+ hour hunt, sit down at the cabin to eat lunch only to see a turkey walk across my deck in front of the kitchen window. Nothing more frustrating than that...
 
I last got out for turkeys spring 2021, got a jake on the last day.
Just didn't have time or desire to go out last spring, not sure why because I do love turkey hunting.
Looking forward to this spring! Hopefully I can get out with my son at least a time or 2.
I recently came into possession of my father's 870 Wingmaster, full choke, and plan to us it; sure hope to bag 1 or 2 with it. It's probably older than I am (I'm in my mid-60s now), the gun has been used very little and is in very good shape. I just cleaned it all up so it is ready to go.
 
I after 4 years without a shotgun and not enough time to practice with my trad bow, I finally broke down and got a shotty. Excited to get out and pattern it. Already dreaming of a spring turkey hunt if I can find some land to hunt on.

Depending where you are in Ontario, check out the Ausable Bayfield Conservstion Area, in the Exeter area, they have land the public can hunt on. My mechanic has property across from one of their tracts, I saw a flock of easily 30 turkeys in their field 2 weeks ago, apparently, there is an albino turkey there as well, or so the story goes. He and his brother both scored 2 large bucks in that area this season as well.

I've seen lot of tracks on my hunting grounds but haven't seen the actual flock in a while. I am seeing more coyote scat though, so time to do something about that.
 
Just checked my game cam photos last weekend and it looks like 5 big Toms survived the spring and fall seasons! With the mild weather we’ve had, the horny bast@rds are already strutting. If I remember to download the photos, I’ll post them for everyones viewing pleasure

The brutal windstorms we had in the spring really wreaked havoc in my hunting spot. A lot of big roosting trees have come down. I spent quite a bit of time cutting and moving busted trees around. Land owner doesn’t mind the extra firewood. Still a lot of work to do.

I`ve been lucky with my property in west quebec to have an abundance of birds,this will be the fourth year that the tillable land has been rented out for soya beans,it have made an amazing difference in the turkey and deer population,some days I can count close to a 100 birds from the porch.The toms seem to be getting heavier off the beans,last years tom was 26 lbs,my best to date,counting the days.
 
I’m hoping to get out with the bow for an archery bird. Haven’t seen any in public land lately but I’ll do more scouting in a month or two.
 
For sure, can't wait. Never too early to get excited. Today is last day for duck in my area and I can't wait for Sept Laugh2 going to be a long year...
Still a bunch of turkey meat in the freezer, I think I'll take out some breast meat and make some nuggets this week. Also reminds me that I still haven't cut off the spurs from my spring birds. Wife hasn't found them in the back of the freezer :redface:
