Remington 700 SPS Varmint vs. Savage Model 12FV

hey experts,

I'm interested in purchasing a new rifle in .223. My budget has me looking at the Remington 700 SPS Varmint and the Savage model 12FV. I'm curious to your thoughts on the 2 firearms and the pros and cons of each.

A good friend of mine has the savage with the acutrigger , awsome unit, and a tack driver.
i dont want to hijack your thred ,bout how does the stock , other than
bedding affect the accuracy ?
 
For the .223 if you want to shoot heavier bullets go with the Savage as it has a rate of twist of 1:9 whereas the 700 SPS has 1:12. Plus the accutriger is hard to beat.
 
I just got a 12FVSS, I was having the same dilemma, had it narrowed down to the exact same guns. I decided on the savage after doing a lot of reading here. rave reviews, accuracy out of the box, and the accutrigger sold me. Now having gun in hand, and having just handled the remington sps, I like to look of the remington (tacticool ;) , generally better looking stock etc...) but I'm still happy I went with savage.

I am, however, already browsing aftermarket stocks :)
 
Savage in my opinion. 69 gr Sierra matchkings and 25.8 gr Varget is the load in my Btvss. 52 gr A-max match and 27 gr Varget is the second favorite. Savage will also save you a few dollars price wise. The accu-trigger is great but it takes a little time to get used to.
 
I had the same problem when I was looking for a .243... ended up with the Savage after some reading on here.

I love the accurtrigger and the out of the box accuracy is the best that I have ever seen.

The only knock against it that I have is the stock... but like it was already mentioned... there are some pretty cool aftermarket stocks out there.

I hoping to push those Amax to a mile.

If you want to shoot LR, the 9 twist Savage is THE way to go.

There are many more options for stocks this season so you can get any look from tupperwear to tacticool. Savage 2008 catalog is online with lots of pics and stats. Enjoy....

Darn, I thought I was shooting far... I'll be there this year, with a similar but different rig (another Savage in .223). I'm working on a base/scope combo for the mile too. The only thing that prevented it last year was when I ran out of elevation and mildots... I know the 75 grain Amax's will make it that far!

Did some calculations on Handloads.com my Rem police with a 1/9 twist with lots of varget shooting 75gr HPBT Match hornadys 2945fps with a 10mph 90deg cross wind i would be 101 " of center
troutseeker you had better get scope with lots of minutes adjustments shooting in 10mph cross wind at 1400 yards. I watched fellows shooting last summer at Connaught wind gusting to 70 kph guys with .308 at 2900fps + where over on other targets, I would be afraid of not knowing where to find the .223 bullets
 
+1 for the Savage

I have a 12FV in .223... and everything said so far is accurate... the accutrigger is a bit odd to get used to... but after 10 rounds... I was in love...

I have replaced my stock... the factory one was flimsy... functional... but flimsy...

I'd buy another savage without even looking at a remington.

PS... I wish I lived in BC... even Alberta or Manitoba... I'd make the drive to Summerland...
