Christmas Sale GNG Carcano Moschetto

Claven2
Well 8m glad everyone else's gng gamble worked out better than my 2 rolls of the dice. Sucks throwing snake eyes twice in a row. Hopefully my marstar gamble will turn out better. Bad luck can't last forever!!

WOW! It's almost as if he recognizes you, deliberately sends you crap and knows you will display your new toys. Thereby lowering expectations.:kickInTheNuts:
Well, that's shot to hell now.

If I had to guess, he had some good and some bad, and didn't want to be left with only the bad ones at the end, so was throwing in the dogs with the gold.

I spoke to marstar on the phone and they outright told me the rifles like I got from gng, if marstar sees those in their pile, they scrap them for their parts business and only send out the guns that won't come back to haunt them.

It makes sense to deal with larger established players sometimes.

Better grab a few more!

I cleaned my up today, didn't take too much, with the old 0000 steel wool and ballistol. Pretty happy about it, bore is good too, unfortunately had a few rifles stolen, and my 91/24 TS was amung them. So down to 2 carcanos instead of 3.

Just got my 1941 Brescia today. Stock and receiver match, (bolt is unmarked), and apart from some slight pitting on the magazine, the rifle is in good shape,IMO. Decent bore, that should clean up well too. Ironically, someone has cut my initials into the stock, lol.
Overall, very pleased with my Marstar purchase….

Looks like the rifle is testined for you :)

That one looks very nice compared to the one I saw somebody shooting at the range.
Could barely hit a 2x4 foot target at 25 yards

Thanks! No cleaning rods, alas. Where are people finding their (repro) slings?

"that auction site".

My Marstar M38 Moschetto arrived today - overall it's nicer than either of my GNG guns, though not without fault. 1940 Gardone VT. Nice bore, correct bolt.

Main issues:
-front band was bent up and the band screw was stripped, screw slot mangled.
-metal peening on the front sight base like someone really hammered on it.
-buttstock trap was bent and misaligned.

None of these are too big a deal. I was able to re-cut the screw threads (love having a lathe and thread dies). Was able to tweak the band back into the correct shape (it likely got hit one something in service) and I was able to re-fit the buttsock trap door with some heat and a little judicious fitting with a 2.5# ball peen.

It all goes together nice now. Tomorrow I'll scrub the grunge off everything and see how she cleans up.

I will say that overall the Gardone workmanship seems to be less than the Beretta and Brescia guns I have here to compare to. The gun's not in bad shape, it just wasn't quite as well made from the factory - fewer parts are hand fit.

Overall I'm much happier with how this arrived for its advertised condition and price compared to GNG. Like I said, I phoned in my order and talked to the guys at Marstar - they were very clear they bring in 10 guns at a time and inspect them. If the guns are not up to their standard, they scrap them to sell spare parts. They only ship stuff they think it reasonable condition. To me, that adds value in shopping there.

I have to say I thaught marstar would send you the best they could find since you called them about this thread, its what I would have done haha

I phoned to offer to pay hand select. They wouldn't do that for these, but assured me they wouldn't send trash because they scrap those ones.

Here's my Marstar M38 Moschetto all cleaned up - a 1940 Gardone Val Trompia. I think it turned out the nicest of the ones I've ordered thus far. Bore is VG+ or better - about the equal of the 1941 Brescia I first ordered. I had a few things to fix up on it (outlined above), but nothing major. The bolt on this one was never color case hardened, it was in the while from the factory, but had some rust staining on it. I did soak the body in Evaporust for 30 or so minutes and gave it a quick touch on the ultra-fine wire wheel to clean it up again. It doesn't look polished or new, it now just looks better maintained. Otherwise I didn't touch the metal finish. There was one rust scab on the underside of the trigger guard that cleaned up OK - but it's beneath the wood and invisible anyhow. No cleaning rod (of course).

The carbine doesn't look to have been refurbed. Matching stock, and the Gardone Val Trompia cartouche is still present - but really lightly struck.

Makes me wish I had ordered the first 2 from Marstar also.

Top to bottom:

-First rifle I ordered from GNG - 1941 FNA Brescia.
-Second rifle I ordered from GNG - mismatched 1918 Brescia
-Third rifle ordered from Marstar - 1940 Gardone Val Trompia

It seems typical on these police guns that officers scribed a name or initials in the stock - this latest one there is a lightly scratched-in "MA" - Mario Andretti?

Meant to post this here but put it in the "shooting" thread.

Got mine, 41 XIX Brescia, the "41" is poorly struck and looks like "11". I suspect the bolt (has "FIVM on small parts) has been recycled as the bolt face shows use but the bore shows little to no use other than machine marks. Blueing is VG except has wear on mag. The stock is beech and matches the receiver and the butt has some dimpling and oil stains and interestingly a rack number which looks like paper held on with steel tacks. I'd probably rate it VG if not for the buttstock.

It was well packaged except the bolt was peaking through.

I'm satisfied. This was from GNG.

I still need to figure out how to raise my front sight enough so I can hit a piece of bristol board at 100 yards. I'm thinking about JB Welding on an vertical piece of soft metal to the front sight and then filing it down until I can hit paper.

I'm open to ideas - I really want to hit what I'm aiming at. 8" group would be acceptable. 6" group preferred.

This little beauty showed up today from MARSTAR. I asked for a sharp cartouche and I got it. Communication was excellent. Consider these as 'before' photos. More after I get it cleaned up.

There are higher sights available, from Numrich, that may actually be made for other rifles, but with a bit of fiddling will fit tightly in the Carcano front sight groove.

The front sight for the M95 Steyr, straight pull CARBINE is quite high and when installed on a K98 or Brazilian M1935 full length rifle, will put you within an inch of a 100yd zero.
