PRIMERS at 500 per K

A buck a primer is cause for some solitary brooding and pondering on the price of things versus the value of things. A primer is a couple pieces of precisely formed metal with a small charge of actual explosive. Some of them are even shiney. It has its uses and been used to spark up cartridges that have fed families, saved lives, over-thrown governments, won wars and changed history more than a few times.

What is the worth of this miraculous product? Is it priceless? The odd one probably was. In spite of the pure utility of the primer; across my 40 plus years of handloading and average "normal" prices there isn't a coin in Canada small enough to buy one most of the time. Usually it was 2 or 3 for a nickel. Who hasn't dropped or spilled primers and concluded they weren't worth the effort to pick up? That all sort of changes when you're out, and your carefully chosen and cherished rifle is only good for a club or propping a screen door open.

Quoted for quality.

I will say that I have always picked up my spilled primers, even when I was buying them at $30/thou.

I dug up some primer to sell. Sorry dogleg I don't know what you mean. I'd like to sell primers on CGN. Anyone know how to ship? Purolator?

It is very tempting to sell some at these ridiculous/insane prices but I just took stock and I think it's best to hang on to what I have for personal enjoyment.

Thankfully, I bought most of mine when they were about 6-8 cents per primer. :)

What do most people on here think is a comfortable number of primers a guy should have on hand?

I would consider it common sense to at least have enough primers and powder to load up the projectiles you have on hand...Of course it is always better to have more than enough.

I know right,.WTF.!?! I have 750 for like $120 & they're not selling, not sure how these rip off thief sellers think their ridiculous prices are fair, Def. Never dealing with those Gougers!

Depends on the guy. For some, who seldom bought more than 100 at a time before and load for one rifle once in while a brick might be lots for awhile. For others that need small and large in both handgun and rifle; then magnums in both, then say 3 types of match primers, and 209s for a bit of shotgunning and muzzle-loading. If he could sleep at night with 1000 of each he's already at 12,000 and still can't shoot his cap and balls. Chances are he isn't sleeping; considers himself out, and has a forlorn look on his face like a boy who just lost his jack-knife or is down to his last brick of primers. Only it's 12 times worse, because he is down to his last brick of primers times twelve.:( Since that is obviously an untenable position, he needs a case of everything bare minimum so he's at 60,000 to have it covered for this year.

I just went back and checked the 'sold' prices for a local online auction here in Red Deer Alberta. "Federal No. 210 Large Rifle Primers - Box of 100" sold for $135 before auction fees and taxes. That's $163 per 100 primers with auction fees and taxes added in. Sold Jan 17, 2023. I wonder if the buyer thought it was a brick of 1000?

Ha ha, ok now we know why there aren't any primers to be had :)

Come on people, nobody's paying a buck a primer SPP or SRP to reload 9mm or 223 for plinking. The large magnum maybe, but you have to have your head screwed wrong to pay 1$ to reload a round you could buy for a few ¢.

I just checked and there's a sponsor that's got stock on CCI Small Pistol Primers Magnum #550 100 Pack. $11.99. Turns out to 120$/1000, not per 100.

Its not pistol primers thay people are after. Large rifle and large rifle magnum are hotcakes

It’s crazy what people will pay, but I’m sure we will be 200-300$/1000 whenever “this” is over? Primers are just under 200$ in the US from retailers if you can find them, why wouldn’t we follow? I’ve been squirrelling primers bullets and powder for years now, bought what I could afford when I could afford it. Now between the prices people are paying and what it might cost to replace I don’t know if I can afford to sell! I have helped out a few friends who are reloader a- but they have turned around and sold them wanting more for the “buddy” deal I gave them(after finding out they put them in the local auction and got4-5x! what they paid me)?….I’ll be keeping them to shoot or trade value, turned out to be a great investment!!
