Truck guns. What is your favourite

For me a "truck gun" needs to be relatively short in overall length for ease of access in and out of the truck. It also requires a detachable magazine for ease of loading and unloading. It also needs to be able to efficiently kill at three to four hundred yards so a variable scope is preferred.

That's one 'truck gun' and my 7mm08 700 did that job well.

My other truck gun was a .22 bolt action with a detachable magazine and a variable scope. My 77-22 did that well.
 
Guess the next question is, what service does a ‘truck gun’ perform. Hard not to note quite a divide in the responses between practicality / bush type choices, and tacticality / walking dead type choices.

For my purposes, has to be able to give me a chance with a grizzly or feed me, whilst being handy and iron sighted. An urban affair is very far from my personal concerns.
 
My " truck gun" is a P14 chambered in 500 Jeffery. With an over all length of 39" and an 18.5" barrel with iron sights. Flings a 570gr jacketed bullet at 2200fps or a 600gr cast bullet at 2000fps.

A bit much for almost everything but it super fun to shoot and have with me in the back woods. Next step is lower the weight to 8.5 pounds. 10.0 is just to heavy.

For me it is a gun that puts a smile on my face while out in the bush. Don't suppose even if there was zombies ill ever see one where I take my truck gun.

If the firearm was going to be left in the vehicle all the time , my pick would be a dependable firearm that is compact , and has low value so that I wouldn't have to worry about condensation/rust and theft . Although there could be some risk in doing so.....

 
When I hear the term truck gun, i always think of a "to hell and back" type of firearm, something you can literally throw in the back seat or box of truck and not worry about it........Tavor for me !
 
As already stated, a handy lever action, chambered in a cartridge that is capable for any purpose/game, with open sights and QR mounted scope, with a detachable magazine...
One of my Winchester Model 88's or my BLR goes on every outing. The BLR in 358 Win has been with me the longest, so has been on many more trips and adventures...and has accounted for its share of game when duty and/or opportunity called.

I can’t have one under your definition of a truck gun, I’ve got to much other junk behind the seat to fit in anything except maybe a extra box of bullets. What ever I grab sits on the jump seat beside me. 8x57 and my 44 ranch hand most often.

My personal definition of a truck gun is a gun that lives in my truck 24/7, it’s not a gun that I put in my truck when I go out in the bush but that’s just the way I look at it. While it’s in my truck it goes everywhere the truck goes, it only came out for use or to be wiped down with an oily rag.

Your definition of a truck gun is correct as a true truck gun is one that is always in the vehicle .

Butcherbill, feel like sharing what easy and practical way you figured out for meeting storage requirements?

I wish there was an easy to open case for a long gun and with a biometric sensor or something and so that I don't have to deal with trigger locks or keys ....
 
Depending on where one lives, and where one goes and does with said truck... he may, or "gasp!!!!" may not, meet storage requirements. Lots of guys trucks, with permanent truck guns, don't leave their property. If they do, it's to run to Sleepy Hollow to grab fuel, a six pack, and maybe some yeast and some copper line?

Nope !!!!! You are risking a criminal record ....the loss of your firearms license .... and the loss of all your guns.

Basically, according to case law ..... as soon as you get home ... the gun is not transported any more ... and if the gun is not in use .... storage regulations apply .... meaning trigger locked or in a locked case ... and ammo not readily available ... meaning ammo locked up in a case as well.
