Do you take an alternate gun for big game?

I hunt mostly moose so the .300 Wby. is first up, for grouse the .22 is a must, sometimes I take the 12 gauge but only if it's lonely, and for old times sake the model 94 30-30. And I don't go home until it's cleared it's throat a few times:)

Anyone else miss an animal because of switching guns?
I usually carry a .308 Rem. pump for deer, I decided to take
out my .35 Whelan Rem.pump for a change(is this a good deer defense
choice?) Deer decides to run across a wide open skid landing,I've got lots of
time, trigger has been worked on this gun, goes off before I pull down on the deer, still time for a second shot but I'm used to the short action and short
stroked. I could have shot it three times if I was carrying my .308.(But what if it had run at me?)

buck fever? how'd it go off before you acquired a sight picture!

I always take a back up to camp and in the truck. But make sure your back up shoots straight in case you need it 4 years ago my dad had a firing pin issue he used my gun I used the back up. i was the only one with a moose that year

I'm nervous about bringing an extra gun along because I hunt alone and often camp and leave my truck parked at the end of logging roads and go for day-long hikes. I sometimes bring a little 410 for grouse in case I see one on the road, but even though I have never had a theft, I would still worry about having a gun stolen from the truck, even if it's just an old 30-30.

Certainly

I always take a backup/alternate with me. If it's for deer hunting one will be a walking gun and the other will be a stand/longrange gun. When I go moose hunting I'll take at least 4, 2 rifles, what ever suits my desire at the time, a 22 with CB's for birds and a shotgun for ducks, geese or birds if we cash out early.

Yeah why not, as long as you have a safe place to store them. A spare is a good thing in case of problems, and its also nice to have a lighter, easier to carry gun if you are going to be doing a lot of walking through bush.

ALWAYS! My first hunt was 7-8 hour drive from home and my uncles gun got ran over by a truck! He took a fit and wrecked the trip, since then I always take 2 rifles of my own. Only problem with that was WAY back when you didnt have to register guns my group met up with another unknown group, we were hunting the same area of bush so we partyed together at nights, nice fellas! One runs out of ammo and nobody has any of the same, so I hand over my spare rifle, when I got back from hunting he was gone with my rifle! So now my spare stays in a locked case in my truck!!!

If i go for a quick after work hunt I like to take my 338WM in synthetic or wood stock, my 450 Marlin and a 410 for birds. If I go for a week trip I take my 2-338's my 450 a 30/06 and the 22 and 410. Cause I just never know who might break into my home while im gonelol..and I just like to shoot htem all when im out.

I can hunt deer in my yard basicly so i neevr really take a back up rifle unless im leaving town i always have a shot gun in the truck for those chickens you see on the road on the way into where your hunting but mainly i just have my one rifle.

When I used to live a little & hunt SE of your area, had a 308 NM for Moose etc and a 410 single shot on the dash for 'Road Chickens'.:)
