Ballistically speaking a 7mm-08 is better than a 308. Anything a 308 can take a 7mm-08 can take. With the right bullet you're certainly good for moose and bear.
Here is a side question to this, are there 120 grain heads that are good for deer. I am just getting started woking up a deer load for my soon to be 13year old, and I would like to keep the recoil down while still keeping full power loads.
I was looking in the nosler manual and the sd for the 120 bt is only a little shy of the 150's in 30 cal.

I'd shoot anything with a 7-08 that i'd shoot with a 7mm mag. I'd just knock about 100 yards off the max range of a 7mm mag. Which still means you're good for moose out to about 400 yards

- way the heck more than most would ever need for moose.Since there is very little difference between 708 and 7x57(which I like to hunt with), I am prepared to stick my neck out and say unequivocally that I would be prepared to confidently use the cartridge on any game that is not too far away for the conditions and that is not likely to eat, stomp or otherwise cause myself injury or angst.
I've shot 4 deer with the 120gr Hornady SP out of a 7mm Rem Mag
. It was flying them over the chrony at just over 3500fps. The only one that didn't exit was a whitetail buck at 60yds, but he sat right down like now! The rest all penetrated with lots of internal damage. I would say that 2600-3000fps out of a 7mm-08 would do a great job for deer. Give me a 7mm-08 with 140gr TSX's or Failsafes, or a 150gr Partition, and I'll hunting anything in NA short of the coastal griz. Yes that includes balckies and mountain grizz.
I have a friend that hunts mostly with 7mm-08, and he shot an elk at 450+ with a 140 TSX broadside and had full penetration. The elk ran full out in to his pack, and down to the truck

7mm-08 has a great following here in this forum. Why? I dunno. Sounds American and exotic... I guess! On the "punny" side if you ask me. Good for school girls, young men still trying to grow a beard, and old fellas with arthritis that can't take recoil anymore.

I saw an elk taken at a solid 500 yards woth a 7-08 last fall. Shooter was using the 140 Accubond. He fired two shots and hit it through the lungs once and through the brisket once, so I have to say it is quite adequate for any N.A. game animal with the right bullet placed properly. I have taken about 9 or 10 moose and 3 Elk with the 7x57, but all were with the 150 & 160 Partition and all were inside of 400 yards. Regards, Eagleye
That depends entirely on whether you roll your own. Factory 7x57s are limp wristed in comparison to 7mm-08 factory loads

I just don't get the the big infatuation and exitement some of you have for this round. It's almost like there's a mini cult following on here. Whereas, it's a pretty uncommon round just about everywhere else.
You are limited to lighter grain bullets in a limited available variety of off-the-shelf ammo (most stores don't even carry it)and for reloaders, limited to lighter, shorter bullets because of the small case capacity and short overall magazine length compared to other 7mm's like the Mauser and .280 Rem. Other than it being compact for those concerned about using shorter actions and lower recoil, I don't see what the big attraction is. It's as if, just because it's "odd" it's the one to get.

Enough power to take deer, moose, elk, with mild recoil. Its called a sensible round that makes sense. 7x57 is also excellent, but they are not being produced in new rifles, which leaves people to choose the closest thing, the 7mm-08.
