7mm-08 question

Has worked for me on 2 smallish whitetails, and 2 eastern moose. So far I've tried 162 hornadys on the meese- complete pass thgrough, but they were both small, and the range was under 100 yrds w/ broadside shots. 139 sp hornie on last years white tail. Not really happy with this one. 170 yrds slight quartering away. Jellied the heart, no exit, zero blood trail. only went 30 yrds though. Have settled on a 120 TSX. Flattened this year's deer right there. High shoulder shot at 200 yrds.

Will little itty bitty guns kill stuff? Sure they will, are there better ways to do it. You bet. Nothing wrong with 708/7x57 ballistics, they're suitable for any North American game as long as ranges are kept within reason. I don't get this magnum bashing. If you shoot big guns all the time recoil means nothing, I shoot my 338 as comfortably as most shoot 308s. I shoot mostly magnuns, most of my guns are semi/custom so weigh the same as many lightweight type guns. So there you have it, no weight penalty, recoil doesn't bother me ( I shoot my .416 at waterfilled bottles, stumps, cans and whatever just for fun and off hand practice) guess I'm just tired of hearing how bad magnums are. If you like small guns, fine use them just don't put down something you obviously have no or not enough experience with.
 
Lots of Magnum experience, 257wby,270 wsm, 270wby, 7mm rem, 300 wsm, 300win, 300wby, 338win, 375 H&H. Nothing against them, but I also realize you don't need to burn excessive powder and recoil to kill game. I find it funny when people state the 7mm-08 is a "girls" or kids rifle. 7mm-08 is just as effective as the 308, which is nipping the heals of the 30-06....

The largest deer I seen shot last year in Sask which was over 300lbs, the guy took it with a 257 roberts and 110 Accubond. Hit him in the chest and he fell over on the spot.......
 
Some of my favorite calibers are the 257wby,270wsm,300 wsm and 375 H&H.... but I also like the 260, 7mm-08 and 308 for their effeciency and lower recoil for shooting off the bench....
 
Nice to see everyone getting along. Nothing wrong with the standard calibers. I've used most of them and never had a bad experience with any of them.

Exactly, it's a sensible round, will do 99% of what a 30-06 can do, except be boring...;)

7x57 and 7-08 are very close in performance. The 7x57's record of killing game up to and including elephants is well documented. Lot's of buffalo and eland fell to the 7x57...

The 30-06 has been used on all sorts of game, too....it may flatten out the trajectory a bit, but probably doesn't kill much better, and wiht premium bullets, there is abotu as much difference between a 30-06 and a 7-08 as a 30-06 and a .270...which is to say- Not much!:)
 
...but a .338-06 will kill pretty much what your .375 does. Doesn't it! Why if a 7mm kills elephants a .338-06 should quite easliy too!

There's 500 ft lbs of difference between the 7mm08 and the .30-06.
1000 ft lbs of difference between the .338-06 and the .375. And all of them will kill elephants. Sounds silly to me too!

No idea, I've never shot anything wiht a 338-06. When I hunted with a 338 WM, it never seemed to do anything a .300WM wouldn't do. 375 H&H's seem to smack a bit harder on moose and bears.

Why if a 7mm kills elephants a .338-06 should quite easliy too!

I've never heard of anyone using a 338-06 on an elephant, so I can't tell you. I'd assume a close enough comparison would be using a 9.3x62 on elephant.:)

The 7-08 can do it all, same as .308...

Those that find the 375 Ruger to be too much to handle are likely inexperienced shooters....

30-06 works just as well as a 7-08 or .308, but remains boring...

In case you haven't noticed there is a "mini cult" for just about every non-magnum hunting round there is here on CGN. These would include the .222, .223, 22/250, .243, 6mm Rem, 250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 25/06, 6.5x55, 260 Rem, 270Win, 7x57, 280 Rem, 30/30, 300 Savage, .308Win, 30/06, .303 Brit, 8x57, 338/08, 358Win, 35Whelen, 9.3x57, & 9.3x62.

Why should the 7/08 be excluded for this cult status? I would say that the majority of big game hunting here in Canada would be for WT deer, therefore the 7/08 fills this need perfectly. It comes in a small package, gives low recoil, is reputed for excellent accuracy, and offers the option of loading a good heavy bullet for bigger game which would a very desirable trait for many shooters.
