I would agree with you...
but there will never be a consensus on "a do-it-all hunting caliber" simply because everyone does not hunt the same...
yup. And yes, I agree on the 7 Mag. - dan

300 WSM will beat both the 30-06 and 308 and fit in a short action.

Great if you reload, that said I’d take .308 just on availability of factory ammo pretty much anywhere I’ve looked the last two years. Have a buddy with a 300wsm that doesn’t hand load and he always says it’s tough to find ammo, this was even before shortages.
here in the Yukon the minimums for bison are .30 calibre, 180-grain bullet, and 2,800 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. a 30-06 meets minimal requirements but is highly unrecommended
The 8x57 does it for me. 180gr TSX at 2780fps. 200gr at 2550/2600 fps. The 30-06 would be my second choice.
What I find for calculation is 200gn @ 2550fps= 2885flbs
Just wondering what do you use for calculator? Just to make sure I have the right numbers!
Velocity X Velocity X weight ÷ 450,240
For your set up above it equals 2888 ft/lb, you were close enough, Phil.
not my mathematic Greg ... that is the other crazy french from the Yukon ...
308...full stop
I’m becoming quite partial to the 338 WM.

I'm a fan of the 7mm mag as a do-it-all hunting caliber.
Chuck what load do you use in the 338 wm?
