Best do-it-all hunting caliber

this year I've been having more fun with a 12 gauge than I ever thought possible.
Can take any big game and birds as well, is there truly any better "do-it-all"?

Assuming you mean big game; because there are maximum/minimum calibers allowed for hunting certain game. In any case, 30-06 will pretty much take out anything in NA. In most cases .308 will also fit the bill.

I reload my hunting ammo
270 is my main hunting rifle
I switch to 30-06 pump for closer in brush areas
7mm mag for moose hunting in the open areas

The last time I looked at the ontario hunting regs, the only specification was center-fire cartridge (for rifle). Has something changed? Not nit-picking, genuinely curious.

There's not a one of us that would want for anything if all we had was a good 30-06 topped with a 3-9.

The trouble is that we gun nutz are also gun snobs and think we have a better plan than the aforementioned rifle/scope combo, but in the end we really don't. :)

.308 has been proven for a long time. Yes the bigger guns have the hitting power out beyond 300 yds. Not to many opportunities present themselves out past that range and most hunters do not have the precise accuracy needed for the 500 to 600 yard kill. I think it’s very cost efficient for shooting to build confidence, advancing to bigger cals for taking long range shots with the killing power. The 7.62x51mm NATO has the same tolerances as the .308. The NATO ammo is easily available and cheap to practice with. Just make sure you clean your gun! When changing back to premium hunting ammo a few shot to dial your scope back in and you’d ready to go.

If you don’t know what you’re going hunting for I would go with the 30-06. My father-in-law used the 270 Winchester for moose and did well with it.
I went through different calibres, at the end because of arthritis in my shoulder from carrying and shooting the 7mm Remington Magnum I went to a Browning X-bolt in a 270 Winchester a lighter rifle, nice recoil pad and lower recoil ,all I hunt is deer and I don’t shoot out pass 400 yards.
But the 30-06 is a better all-round rifle.

.458 Win Mag.

Load cat sneeze loads with a round ball for rabbits, all the way up to full on dangerous game loads for Winnebagos.

About all I would say further to that, is maybe the .458 X 2" American, might be a better pick, if only from a post apocalyptic perspective, as about any belted case can be cut down to make it, and it doesn't give away a lot in power at the high end.

Pretty much anything you choose that you can shoot regularly enough to stay in practice with, will work fine....
