I hear ya, 100%. Often, the gun itself rather than the chambering decides what I take on my own hunts. If I like the gun, I won’t worry as much about the ballistics long as it’s in the range of appropriateness for the game.
When I was guiding, I was detached from all sentimentality and quickly found I was favouring cartridges and loads I went into the business disliking (‘magnums’ and I still dislike the marketing connotations of the term, other 3000fps cartridges). When talking about hunting for the pleasure, my cartridge choices can differ quite a bit from when talking about hunting as a business.
In pure cold effectiveness, speed kills best. Doesn’t have to be silly Weatherby speed, even a .30-06 qualifies, but I couldn’t deny the faster the bullet of appropriate construction was going the better the effects on bears and mountain game when viewed in bulk averaging without predeterminations.
