Semi-auto 22LR options other than Ruger/GSG/Savage?

New gun owner here, looking for my advice on my first semi-auto 22lr for plinking.

See tons of recommendations for the Ruger 10/22, but I don't plan on heavily modifying anything and the 10 round mag limit turns me off.

See a lot of other mentions for the GSG-16, but I would just rather something less tactical / more traditional looking.

The Savage Model 64 seems to have lots of negative reviews.

The Marlin 795 seems to fit the bill perfectly - it's economical, it can take high capacity mags, and has last round hold open. But, it looks like they've been discontinued and I can't find it anywhere (at least online).

Any other good 22LR semi-auto's that I'm missing?

I don't own one, don't know anyone that does, but the Remington 597 comes to mind as another option?. There are adapters to run the 597 mags in 10/22s.

You can also get your 10/22 magwell modified to accept the Dlask TUF-22 25 round mags, ooor just buy a TUF-22 from Dlask.

I opted for a Savage A22 for my first rifle purchase. And I have been very pleased with it. I modified it a bit and it’s impressively accurate. There’s 25 round butler creek mags available. Mines been flawlessly reliable and is easy to clean. I also own a 10/22 take down and love it also and would hard pressed to choose between the two the savage is far more accurate and I love it for that but it’s also heavier and longer. The Ruger is just a handier rifle that also packs down ultra compact into a back pack allowing me to go to the range via motorcycle.

And last one I can think of would be the CZ512 has factory options of 25 round mags if that’s your thing. And from most accounts it just a good rifle as long as polymer does not bother you.

You can find used out-of-production (French) Gevarms in the Equipment Exchange Forum.

You can find current-production (Turkish-made) Winchester Wildcats just about anywhere.

Browning Buckmark rifle. Target or sporter bbl. Limit to ten in the mag doesn't really pose a problem. Some like em, some don't. Personal choice.

Lotsa choices

If "plinking' is your focus, not 1/2" @ 50, then even the Savage 64 is fine. I have 2 and the one with a 4x Weaver gets under 1" @ 50. The other has a red dot and at 50 its about 1 to 1-1/2'" - those are limited to 10s. I had an A22 and didn't like the trigger-pull and reset but it was accurate too. For the Marlins, the 795 has the 10 round limit you don't want. The Marlin m60 has 15 or 18 if you can find one - they show up on EE often but may 'run out' someday. I have one and it also is good for ca 3/4" or so @ 50. And I have an Armalite AR-7 (Henry makes one now) that's good for under and inch @ 25yds., what it's made for. I've read a lot of good things about Scorpio 22s as well, I just have enough for now. Dr Deals online has some of them on hand.

I just looked on EE and there's a nice looking Lakefield 64B that's tempting . . . a touch of Canadian History.

I wouldn't recommend someone buy their first 22lr to be the one that sells for 1k+, and is out of production and practically unavailable. (Though it is a great rifle)

The Winchester wildcat is basically a 10/22 type, where it doesn't have the aftermarket of the 10/22 but if you literally don't think you would ever change a thing on your rifle it's a more economical choice than a 10/22. Though it is limited to 10.

The real question is what is more important a great rifle, or do you want a rifle with more than 10 shots? Because unfortunately you can't easily get both, and with your criteria being:

Fudd look
10+ rounds
Good
Semi-auto
Don't modify

Oddball suggestion PPS 50, 25 round stick magazine and 50 round drum magazine. Styled after a PPS41, the wood stock version looks moderately fudd like.
Chiappa M1-22 while it doesn't come with 10+ magazines, there are 3D printed ones that kind of work (I wouldn't recommend)

Like Scotty says, I think a regular 10/22 using the Remington 597 magwell mod is the closest to what you want, a non-permanent modification and is relatively cheaper than the TUF-22 mod.

You might consider the used Anschutz 525, available from CGN supporter Intersuplus for $369? I haven't fired one, but every bolt action Anschutz I've ever owned or tried out has been very accurate. These are meant to be scoped, and a second mag would cost another $100 (from Nordic Marksman). I don't have a rifle like this myself, since I don't like semi-autos -- except for my target pistols -- and most definitely would not get one for a beginning shooter.

Love my Remington 597 !!
Large mags and runs great.

Comes with me to the range most times.

Not really a stock version anymore though with the "scary" black adjustable stock, flip up sights and the redesigned mag release lever.

I wouldn't discount the Savage 64 that quickly, especially if you're new to shooting. It's a decent, basic rifle that won't cost a fortune. I picked up one on a Boxing Week sale for $150 for the kids to shoot. I added a $30 bipod and an $80 scope (a cheap red dot would've been fine too), and it's great for unloading a bunch of cheap ammo at shorter distances. Heck, I probably use it more than anybody else in the house.

It's not gonna shoot 1/2" at 50 yards, but if you're looking for a semi-auto that's probably not your goal anyway. My only complaint so far is that it's a chore to clean the thing.

The DLASK TUF-22 is a great option. It takes the HC3R mags that has 25rnds ready to go and holds another 20rnds on the side.
I have the 9" TD model in a Magpul X-22 backpacker stock. Nice package and nicely put together.
The only semi-auto that is "good enough" to run with my bolts and levers:)

“Chore to clean” that’s why you upgrade to the A22.

Of course the powers that be, had to ban the best .22 semi-auto of all time, the Mossberg 715T

With this simulated assault rifle, and a brick of Thunderbolts, one could potentially have a cheap afternoon of plinkin'!

Hopefully by voting CPC next federal, P.P. can make this a Canadian reality, again.
