Hey guys,
I`m having a little problem with my Norinco M14s. I load either the 5 round or 5/20 round magazine-insert into rifle and when i release bolt a round will "hang up" and not enter chamber-almost like there is not enough of a lead in to the chamber or the bullet profile is causing this. Maybe its the ammo i am trying to use? Its Wolf Gold, brass case, 150gr SP.
Any suggestions out there?
Thanks,
Steve

are you riding the oprod with your hand when loading the first round? or are you just pulling the oprod back and letting her fly home to chamber the round?
if you are doing the latter, which is correct, i would check mag feed lips at the muzzle end of the mag.

Nope...doing the latter; and the round become jammed kinda half in mag and wants to lead into chamber but won`t.

That sounds like the problem I had today at the range......

Started the day with some Dominion Arms .308 form '69, then switched to UMC 308, then South African and finally some Indian. It happened with all of it.
The only time I actually got to shoot through a full 5 round mag (Twice) was with the .308 from Dominion Arms.

Here are some Sample pics....

It is almost like the Angle was to severe, it would either be only half way in and at a wacky angle...

.....or it was 80% in but just 'hung up'...a few times, only a 1/4" was sticking out.

Some rounds I kept to show as evidence...when I asked for help :) You can see how far they went before getting stuck.

Other than the feeding issues..it shot great...??? :)

Thoughts....

Thanks for the great pics Assyrian. My problem is similar but the round doesn`t even make it in that far.

Some of mine didn't either. I was (of course) using brass cases for the sample pics, they would only stick out so far.

But I guess the mag lip idea sounds good. The rounds are being pushed forward at an incorrect angle.

How do we know what a good mag lip angle is??? Can those feed ramps be polished up or enlarged???

I've been shooting south african and federal 150 gr..... so far no issues in either of my 2007 date stamped rifles.
Awesome pics Asyrian..... I don't have an answer. It doesn't look like a mag issue as far as feed lips go..... wonder if it is the shape of the mag followers.
may not have anything to do with the mags... just a thought though.

Sell the rifles for scrap...I will give you $100 each:runaway::eek:

Take a look at your extractor. Is is binding?
What is shown in the pics is a perfect example of a frozen/ binding extractor which does not allow the base to "seat" on the boltface causing the binding of the catridge in the chamber.

Could it be your op-rod spring being too weak?

has the problem always happened or is it just recent? I have been shooting south african with my one 5 round magazine and NO issues at all.
Have you tried the south african ammunition?
Have you checked your chamber? looks like you still have alot of cosmoline in the nooks and crannys, maybe some is gummed up in the chamber. New ammunition should slide in and out without any force, try this as well.

I will have to give it a good cleaning again.
As for myself, it didn't matter which ammo was used.

I will give the bolt a good clean again...

Won't be able to fire it until next weekend. I will bring a camera to document the jammed rounds.

Give everything a good cleaning including the chamber( with the supplied chamber scrubber) and strip the mag too. Make sure the oprod is running true and not binding.I found that on some new rifles the mags were difficult to chamber. Give the mag a good smack to ensure it's right in the well. If you've tried different mags and maybe a different stock and get the same result, it could be in the rifle itself. Try all the easy stuff first.

how to strip the mag?

bottom plate of mag can be lifted witha small flatblade screwdriver and slid out, mag guts come out bottom, degrease everything, spray with g96, wipe down and re assemble.

I see a lot of brass sticking to the mag follower. There must be some pretty good drag on it. They should have made that piece out of plastic.

Make sure that you aren't covering the bottom gas vent hole if you are resting your rifle on a sandbag. I had terrible FTFs until I corrected this. I still had some FTFs with the South African surplus. My rifle ran 100% with the Powershok 150 gr soft points. The commercial stuff seemed more powerful (I think it is loaded to higher pressures than the surplus) so it cycled the op rod more reliably. Could the op rod spring be too strong for the surplus ammo? Now I have an excuse to buy a USGI bolt and just shoot .308.
