The perfect shot , Or slightly off

"Taint" - well, sometimes. Some years ago partner and I were hunting elk near Hudson Bay, Sask. in late September. Was raining - partner and I did not feel like getting wet in the bush, so we were in our camp - each of us had a quad. A pickup pulled in and they asked if we would recover an elk from in the bush with our machines - sure - our quads were on a trailer and we followed them in our truck with trailer to a cut line. Buddy standing there with a 30-30 rifle - he had fired once as the elk had stepped out of the bush - then watched it hobble down the cutline, away from him, and it then turned into the bush on other side of the cut line - he asked "What was I supposed to do? Shoot it in the ass??" My partner found a dollap of blood perhaps 50 yards in the bush - as if it had been coughed up - we were facing perhaps 15 miles of bush and swamp in that direction - in the rain - searched for several hours and never found a critter to drag out of the bush. Partner and I both quite sure if it was coughing blood it would be dead, somewhere. A "Texas Heart Shot" would have likely let them drive their truck up to it - as it turned out, he still had his tag that night.

Maybe I should start a tattoo thread?

Will sound impossible or "shocking" to some on Internet, but a very accomplished poacher that I met some years ago in West Central Sask (East of Meadow Lake) seemed to be convinced his 22 Magnum was about his most "perfect" deer rifle - not near the booming sound to get caught, doing what he did well. We had supper with him - deer meat, of course.

Funny enough, my .22 LR Cooey 39 took the most "freebee deer" fer me as well yrs back. ;)

Maybe some posts above mis-understand what is a "Texas Heart Shot" - or at least my understanding of it - is NOT a hit to the rectum or the "ham" - is into the root of the tail - to break the rear spine and pelvis bones - make the thing fall down and lose the use of it's hind legs - not a kill shot (usually), but extremely effective immobilizing shot - especially if that is the only target that you have to hit. Related to the difference between a "killing shot" (make it dead, eventually), versus a "stopping shot" (make it quit, right now - is maybe not dead yet, but is not getting away or coming at you). Many hunters have got killed by "dead animals" - a killing shot, on some animals, is not fast acting enough, to save the shooter.

Often if I make a less than perfect shot, I shoot again. No point carrying those shells in the magazine for nothing.

Same.

It hits vitals or it doesn't. Bullet quality is gonna be key there, not caliber/cartridge. I can see maybe if it hits a forelimb and major bone before vitals but I'd rather the right 6.5 bullet than something pedestrian like an Interlock in a 338 if that happens.

Can usually tell how much hunting experience someone has by how adamantly they state the opposite.

you sorta remind of
Hey Joel : "why do you keep banging your head against the wall ?"
Joel : "cause it feels good when I stop"

say what you ( know) and try to add something to the thread

If you can't make a good shot then pass on it plain and simole.

Yups . that's why the question . If you have the opportunity and can shoot the distance . Does it matter what cartridge you have in the tube . Maybe a shoulder shot "slightly off" the perfect 6.5 shot ..
Your answer is without any jam . does a 338 win make up a bit of error or shot placement over the puny 6.5 ?

My answer is all you need. if you can't make a good shot then don't take it, don't matter what gun you have on hand.

This answer was simple for most people but not you it seems.
