2023 spring turkey

So far today has been a bust. At about 6:10, I had 2 hens come in close and they had a gobbling Tom in tow. Unfortunately the Tom never revealed itself and slipped away. Now I just had two jakes come into my decoys to have a look, but they were a little too small for my liking so I took a pass. I’ll be packing it in soon as I’m frozen and it’s starting to snow.

Astute observation...
It was a spot and stalk bird... a group of 15 or so with three toms hung up after I passed on four jakes earlier... I dogged them for an hour before they got to a stalkable position just over a rise in an overgrown field... dropped all my gear and belly crawled into range, the Tom and I popped up at the same time... he had time to "putt" once before a 2 ounce load of #6's hit him... the rest of the group exploded into the air.
 
All done, this one was a little more traditional, set up to the roosted bird and brought him in to the decoys

At least you didn’t have to go wading through a river to get him. How was the weather out east?
 
Missed spring opening day because of a medical appointment and now I see turkeys have moved into unusual off limits for shooting places like the Ottawa Experimental Farm and where the coyotes roam behind my house, which I assume is a bad sign for a turkey novice like me. But we'll see how I do.

I think that I hunt West of you a bit...It was cold but the rain held off for the most part... seem to be more birds than the past couple years.

Haha thanks! Actually got it on film as well, the recoil blew my gun mounted tactacam off its mount. But my 2nd tactacam was set up on a small tripod nearby and caught it lol
