For all of the game I hunt with rifle, shotgun, rimfire and bow I take 3 arrows, cartridges or shells per tag/bag limit of animal I am hunting. So for deer and turkey I’ll take 3 shells, birds I’ll take 18+ shells, squirrel 10 .22lr cartridges type thing.
It’s served me well for years and I’ve never run out of ammo. Before I run out I either have enough meat for the day or I’ve done a self assessment and called off the hunt and turned it into a scouting trip. It’s so much better to know when to call it quits on a bad day instead of unloading on game and wasting ammo or wounding critters.
