How many rounds ammo in your pack

All together in my rifle and cartridge pouch, while hunting, 14 rounds. Usually I only need one, sometimes none.

I bring a box(ish) total to camp. In the field I’ve got the gun full and a few extra in my pack. Maybe 5 or 6 total. This is for moose/deer hunting. Usually 1 or 2 is all that’s required but I guess you never know when you might need a few extra.

Some of you guys are packing a lot of rounds. If it's a big game hunt I like to hunt with detachable mags, most of the time it's 3 rounds in a mag and another spare mag so 6 rounds total. If the lever goes out it's 6 rounds again carried in a stock holder. I think the stock holder on one of my floorplate guns maybe holds 7 rounds so that's full for a hunt. I'd be lucky if I had half a box kicking around in the truck for spare rounds.

For grouse I am def packing a full 25 round box for a hunt can easily miss or do a lot of shooting. Same with ducks at least a 25 round box.

8 in a belt pouch, 3 in my rifle. Never needed to open the pouch in 40+ years. EE.

I’ve never either, but when cleaning out a moose in the dark and hearing the cracks and snaps the woods around you I sometimes wonder if I have enough.

For all of the game I hunt with rifle, shotgun, rimfire and bow I take 3 arrows, cartridges or shells per tag/bag limit of animal I am hunting. So for deer and turkey I’ll take 3 shells, birds I’ll take 18+ shells, squirrel 10 .22lr cartridges type thing.

It’s served me well for years and I’ve never run out of ammo. Before I run out I either have enough meat for the day or I’ve done a self assessment and called off the hunt and turned it into a scouting trip. It’s so much better to know when to call it quits on a bad day instead of unloading on game and wasting ammo or wounding critters.

Always 20 total, 3 or 4 or 5 of those will be in the rifle while hunting, the rest are in a Frankford Arsenal Ammo Vault in my pack... in more than four decades of hunting all over, I only had to go deeper into the ammo case one time and that was to dole out rounds to a client... so you can decide if the extra rounds are necessary. I still do it.

I only ever ran out of ammo once (while hunting), feral goat culling in New Zealand. We were hunting for a fallow buck, and not having much luck. Then a large herd of feral goats appeared across the valley and the landowner wanted them gone.
Went thru a couple boxes of 6.5x55. The goats are not too bright and we just took our time. Without any natural predators, they become a real pest for landowners.

Like most here I have never needed more than 2-3 rounds, but there is no way I could head out with only that many, even though I would most likely never have an issue.
I guess its just a feeling of "preparedness" maybe? Also weight has never been a concern for me either, maybe one day... Still think I'd be packing 20.

In the mountains on a potentially 2 week backpack hunt the weight limits are completely different than casual bush hunting. You do feel every ounce carried you don’t need.

I absolutely believe you, just haven't been in that situation so its hard to wrap my head around it. One day, hopefully...

I usually carry 15 at all time, 4-5 in the rifle(if it ain’t a single shot) and the rest in an ammo wallet at my belt!
I wouldn’t go with less and I sometimes carry a full 20!

Generally speaking: 3-5 in the gun and 3-4 in a spare magazine. Maybe another five on a stripper clip (or Tuff QuickStrip) in a pocket - Optional, depending on how serious the terrain / distance is.

If on a multiday trip, there may be more in the pack, depending on trip details.

I shoot a 6.5 Grendel so I need as much as I can carry. Spray and pray. ;)

Had no problem on multi-day sheep hunts with 9-10 rounds on me with only 1 tag in my pocket. Usually that's what I try to carry minimum. Going into camp with multiple tags for a week might take up to a couple boxes but usually only have up to 10 on me for each day. Wanna be prepared for at least one rodeo like a poor first shot on way in and then enough left to save your ass from another potential rodeo on the way out (bear mishap or survival situation if get lost or hurt).
