Easily 90% are kooks. But when you're sitting in a glorified outhouse complete with a padded rest waiting to assassinate a whitetail deer that is munching on apples 50 yards away, a head shot is pretty doable. Seems lots of people here don't mind if the occasional deer runs away with it's jaw blown off.

Yeah my cousin and I were pinned down by a big wt buck. All you could see was about 8” of neck and the head above the buckbrush. I said shoot it in the neck. Well he went about 2” high. Jaw shot! We were sick watching that guy run away. By some miracle we found him not long after and killed him. Made for a terrible memory and even worse field photos. Won’t do that again. Kooks.

I have not post on this because I have never been involved with an elk hunt.

A close friend of mine is a guide. He has regaled me with many stories about clients who showed up with super rifles and proceeded to miss their targets.

he has said more than once that he likes to see the client show up with old, well-used 30-06s, because the 30-06 is plenty of gun if you can place a shot.

I have sold most of my rifles, but the last Moose I shot was with a 338Mag (at about 20 feet). The Grand Slam seemed to work well. I would use that rifle for an elk.

Always good results with my .35 Whelen, 250gr Swift A-Frame @ ~2400 fps mv. Got 9.3's similar ballistics I'd like to try.

They sure do. I like full freezers more than I like having antlers to hang, but don't think I don't have a few nice sets of those either lol. Just don't care so much anymore.

He says "pictures of does" like its a bad thing lol. Its something to show for being out and hunting. The biggest mouths? Not so much. Little to show, a whole lot to tell lol.

Stick to kitchens, hun.

You mean how did the 50th thread about big game and 6.5mm bullets started by a guy who gets all his threads locked, and has a history of PMing people abuse and threats get locked?

Woulda happened without me being a jerk, trust me lol.
 
.416 REM and .340 Wby worked very well for me but I travelled a long way to hunt. Most any caliber should work but using your big guns is fun, required or not.
