What rifle did you use? I am curiuos as to the new Mini-14 in 6.8, is this what you shot? Or was is another rifle?
Yup, that's the rifle I was shooting.

I just measured a NA 7.62x39 & got 3.07 ahead of the cannuler.
That's the only way you'll get smaller than .308 bullet! It will measure .308 below the cannuler.
& I also just measured a euro & got 3.10 ahead if cannuler & 3.11 below!
Are you sure your Mic & dial indicator is zero'd correctly!
& NO filing the point of a bullet has little or NO effect on accuracy, it's the base that's important.
& it's also been pretty much proven that PSP has no better or worse deflection problems than a RN bullet.
Funny how I'm looking at a digital micrometer reading .305 on a Canadian
Military 7.62 x51, if I flip to metric I get 7.62mm.
My calipers get the same reading, Like every caliper we ever used did.
And we taught it in weapons course's CFSEME school in CFB.Bordon Ont.
As for filing a bullet. That’s how people use to get them to tip, by breaking or filing the tip. If the tip is not perfect the bullet is very unstable, even when the lead tips are dented slightly there inaccurate. Any sniper can tell you that. I have some 7.62x39 euro soft point ammo, there extemely inaccurate!
but good for plinking.
But I defy someone to show me a 3/8" 5 shot group with a filled tip bullet! Too get that tight I used match grade ammo, reamed the neck, inside & outside, & handed loaded the powder with a digital scale, even the primers will change your accuracy!
I doubt very much if any varmint class shooters would agree that filling the tips doesn't affect accuracy?
I've even seen serious shooters polish the bullets and re-weigh them.
4 bullets tested. a 7.62 x51 FMC. a 30-06 SP. a 5.56mm FMC.& a 30 cal carbine FMC. They were all shot through 2 sets of dowels into a pre-aimed impact point on a target. The round nose 30 cal. carbine had the least deflection of all.
Also in another test to 30-30 Winchester flat nose bullet showed to have much lower deflection than and pointed bullet in any caliber.
The 30-30 when using a pointed (which you wouldn't do in a tube magazine!)
caused the 30-30 to loose accuracy and deflect!
We personally found the 180 gr..303 saber tips bullets were great hitters on moose, but in heavy bush the 220gr, kksp (round nose) was much more accurate.
But I guess if your just plinking it doesn't matter much.
But if your shooting to achieve a 1/4 " group it matters!
But I'm only a QL6 tec. & Gunsmith

what were the groups like? Good rifle? any more info you can give would be appreciated![]()
Never had a chance to do any serious bench shooting with it so not sure how it groups but the rifle handled and performed nicely. It's definitely a bit more recoil out of a Mini 14 than one is accustomed to but not unmanageable by any means.
Well I must appoligize I sure didn't realize we were getting "achieve a 1/4 " group" from a Mini-30? that was the gun we were talking about![]()
You personally found a 220gn bullet deflects less than a 180, well I would certainly agree with that but your decision was only based on the bullet tip??
Show very little attention to any detail if attempting to do a comparison to draw results from don't you think
Your pull test results but from where??? when you did a search did you also neglect to read the results that showed otherwise? Sounds like the same recourse you used to compare 180 saber points to 220 RN & make a decision based on the bullet points only!
I also see in your bullet comparison you group the 30 carbine with 7.62 x51 FMC. a 30-06 SP. a 5.56mm FMC.. Another conclusion derived incorrectly by comparing 3 relatively high velocity round to a low velocity round & basing results on bullet tip
All I see from you is inaccuracys & failure to comprehend your results !
And you proclaim to be a "QL6 tec. & Gunsmith"![]()

First off the 3/8 groups were not with the mini 30 of course, that's imposable!, rather with a .257 Ackley target barrel.
Perhaps when posting replys you could try to stay on subject!
This thread is entitaled "New Ruger Mini"
