New Ruger Mini

Ya, I don't think they are available to consumers yet.

I just measured a NA 7.62x39 & got 3.07 ahead of the cannuler.
That's the only way you'll get smaller than .308 bullet! It will measure .308 below the cannuler.
& I also just measured a euro & got 3.10 ahead if cannuler & 3.11 below!

Are you sure your Mic & dial indicator is zero'd correctly!

& NO filing the point of a bullet has little or NO effect on accuracy, it's the base that's important.

& it's also been pretty much proven that PSP has no better or worse deflection problems than a RN bullet.

Funny how I'm looking at a digital micrometer reading .305 on a Canadian
Military 7.62 x51, if I flip to metric I get 7.62mm.
My calipers get the same reading, Like every caliper we ever used did.
And we taught it in weapons course's CFSEME school in CFB.Bordon Ont.

As for filing a bullet. That’s how people use to get them to tip, by breaking or filing the tip. If the tip is not perfect the bullet is very unstable, even when the lead tips are dented slightly there inaccurate. Any sniper can tell you that. I have some 7.62x39 euro soft point ammo, there extemely inaccurate!
but good for plinking.
But I defy someone to show me a 3/8" 5 shot group with a filled tip bullet! Too get that tight I used match grade ammo, reamed the neck, inside & outside, & handed loaded the powder with a digital scale, even the primers will change your accuracy!
I doubt very much if any varmint class shooters would agree that filling the tips doesn't affect accuracy?
I've even seen serious shooters polish the bullets and re-weigh them.

4 bullets tested. a 7.62 x51 FMC. a 30-06 SP. a 5.56mm FMC.& a 30 cal carbine FMC. They were all shot through 2 sets of dowels into a pre-aimed impact point on a target. The round nose 30 cal. carbine had the least deflection of all.

Also in another test to 30-30 Winchester flat nose bullet showed to have much lower deflection than and pointed bullet in any caliber.
The 30-30 when using a pointed (which you wouldn't do in a tube magazine!)
caused the 30-30 to loose accuracy and deflect!

We personally found the 180 gr..303 saber tips bullets were great hitters on moose, but in heavy bush the 220gr, kksp (round nose) was much more accurate.

But I guess if your just plinking it doesn't matter much.
But if your shooting to achieve a 1/4 " group it matters!
But I'm only a QL6 tec. & Gunsmith

Well I must appoligize I sure didn't realize we were getting "achieve a 1/4 " group" from a Mini-30? that was the gun we were talking about

You personally found a 220gn bullet deflects less than a 180, well I would certainly agree with that but your decision was only based on the bullet tip??
Show very little attention to any detail if attempting to do a comparison to draw results from don't you think

Your pull test results but from where??? when you did a search did you also neglect to read the results that showed otherwise? Sounds like the same recourse you used to compare 180 saber points to 220 RN & make a decision based on the bullet points only!

I also see in your bullet comparison you group the 30 carbine with 7.62 x51 FMC. a 30-06 SP. a 5.56mm FMC.. Another conclusion derived incorrectly by comparing 3 relatively high velocity round to a low velocity round & basing results on bullet tip :runaway:

All I see from you is inaccuracys & failure to comprehend your results !
And you proclaim to be a "QL6 tec. & Gunsmith" :runaway:

what were the groups like? Good rifle? any more info you can give would be appreciated:)

Never had a chance to do any serious bench shooting with it so not sure how it groups but the rifle handled and performed nicely. It's definitely a bit more recoil out of a Mini 14 than one is accustomed to but not unmanageable by any means.

Well I'm glad to hear a positive report about a mini-14. I just want to find reliable information about accuracy of this gun. If the groups were in the 2 to 3" range consistently I'd buy the gun in 6.8.

Flattened soft point bullets won't make a bit of difference in a hunting situation...

If your 1/4" group load doubles in size to 1/2" , it's still going ot get the job done...

First off the 3/8 groups were not with the mini 30 of course, that's imposable!, rather with a .257 Ackley target barrel.
I was referring to accuracy in general to anyone that believes you can file a bullet down & not lose accuracy! :slap:

2 nd. The 220 gr, comparison was with my own practical tests.
And yes I do attribute it to a round nose bullet.
I now use round nose Hornady168 gr .311 bullets in my .303 & they have less deflection than the 180gr. pointed.

3rd. the comparison of different calibers was done & aired on a T.V. show. I believe it may have been weaponoligy? Or something like that.
Yes velocity does play a roll in accuracy for sure. But it's well know to anyone that has done any kind of testing that pointed bullets deflect more than round or flat nose!
Try talking to Elwood Epps. or Barnes about that fact.
My old instructor, a well known Master Gunsmith named Ralph Olson strongly emphasized that fact as a ballistic expert. If I told him about filing bullet tips doesn't hurt accuracy he'd a flipped out!
Even His friend P.O.Ackley agreed with the fact of round nose bullets deflect less!.
Ever read Hatchers or Lyman’s books? I think not by the sounds of it.
My inaccuracies are more like your failure to of known what I actually did in entirety,
And by the way I did measure some Hornady 168 gr. match bullets last night,
They did measure .309, I measured different .30 cal. bullets all ranging from
.305 to .309, but the military 7.62 x 51 bullets I measured still show .305!

But there are millions of results out there on many types of tests & I'm sure as many that show one thing, another would refute it.
There's just not enough time to get into all the tests ever done! &
I just don't want to be bothered to be honest.
I must ask if you ever had any formal training?

I'm leaving this up this time cause apparently last time I warned you guys about that picture it wasn't enough. Next time I see this in any of the forums I'll take a personal interest in making sure that the member gets the boot, sooner or later.

Infraction this time, it's a warning for everyone, there are members on this site that have kids with downs and I thank God everyday I look at my kids that they're healthy and normal.

Perhaps when posting replys you could try to stay on subject!
This thread is entitaled "New Ruger Mini"

Now all of a sudden your pulling a .257 Ackley target barrel outta your hat  got a rabbit in there too :p

In regard to bullet tip as others have said the bent, damaged, flattened tip makes little to no diff in accuracy in the New Ruger Mini or most other average hunting rifles.

If it were so there'd sure been a pile of lost game running around due to tip damage of various kinds from clips, tube fed rifles & tip battering in the mag!
:D

ya, if you guys would stay on topic I would'nt have posted that pic and subsequently got in trouble, its all your fault. Not.

Sorry guys, my bad. It won't happen again.
