What's that smell?

It almost makes me want to avoid shooting it. Although, it seems better than the CCI SV I usually shoot.

50 yards from a bench, with a 4x scope and bag for a front rest... That bugger in the upper left might have been my fault on the first target, but it still really pisses me off. :)

It’s the priming compound. Eley’s recipe was licensed to Aguila who used it for years, altered it and dropped the license. Older Remington club type ammo marked “eleyprimed” smells the same as well. I get more of a super glue type odour off it personally.

It's likely that if shooters shot Eley as their first .22LR ammo, no complaints of its smell would be made.

In any case, when Eley was dominating the competition a while back, no one complained about the smell.

I see your point. If I were a serious shooter, maybe I'd never even make comment.

I tell ya though, I miss the smell of firing average ammo, like CCI SV.

Cheers,

Other good ammo doesn't have the Eley odour. Try SK or RWS, both of which is usually much better than CCI.

I hate the smell of cheap ammo in the morning!

Try buying some. The entry level grades may be relatively inexpensive as far similar ammos go, but there's nothing cheap about Eley's top tier ammo grades. ;)

I just may do that. The hesitancy on my part is the inconvenience. Locally, I'm only finding one dealer who only sells bricks. There is another that deals RWS - it's a bit of a drive, but what the heck.

If the fever gets me, maybe I'll order a box or two by mail. I'm shy to get a brick of ammo I've never shot before. But man, I'll be gritting my teeth on the shipping cost.

Probably worth it though, as I could then get a few bricks with free shipping.

Cheers,
Neil

Ooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooh that smell
The smell of accuracy surrounds you

:) I did like it's consistency - I had only that one flyer in a box of 50. With my regular stuff, I'd expect 3 or 4 per 50. Keep in mind that I'm maybe an average shooter (if even) with an average rifle - I'm pretty sure that a lot of the variance I see is due to my own errors or due to the rifle itself.

As it happens though, CCI CV has actually produced my best groups. Except for the rate of flyers, I love that stuff.
