Last week i took the plunge and purchased a 3 lens Pilla shooting glasses kit from Pilla Sport Canada. I have been looking at these glasses for some time but found making sense of either all the information difficult or the complete opposite, that i couldn't find i couldn't find the answer to my questions. I got lucky and Pilla had a booth set up at Roue Du Roy shooting club about two hours from my home so i got to try before i bought. A big thank you to Faveh from Pilla Sport Canada for spending over an hour with me going through all the options and possibilities. Without his input and physically handling the product I'm sure i would have ended up with the wrong glasses. Here are some of the things i learned that may help people thinking of buying these glasses.
Lens Colors: Not going to get into the different filtrations as its very personal and based on your sport and shooting conditions.
Lens Type: Outlaw X7 was was first choice. Based on the web info and my interocular distance i should have been able to purchase the X7's with their tighter curvature. Once i put the X7's on this was not he case. The lens was fine but the frames (temples) put a lot of pressure on my head just in front of my ears. The carbon wide frames solved this as they had a little bump out in overall width. So there are a few different frames that can help with this issue which is not information i can find anywhere on the website. There may be even more differences between the frames. I didn't get the X7 however because of my gun mount. After thinking i had everything figured out i went and got my gun and mounted it. The lens was just touching my stock, i did not want that. The solution was to go with a Copa Mundial frames which allow titling of the lens upward to align with your line of sight if you mount over the gun which in my case for skeet i do. The Copa Mundial brought back the pressure problem so it was on to the X6 wider frames
X6. The X6 lens brought everything together for me in terms of fit. I will say i can just barely see the frame attachment points in the extremes of my peripheral vision. This was not not an issue with the X7's but a better fit was much more important to me then this minor issue. I ended up with X6 lenses and wide rubber Copa Mundial frames.
Why not Top Gun. I'm as guilty as anyone wanting the most expensive option but the top gun did not work for me. They are physically larger then the X6 and have better coverage but they did not work with my gun mount. When paired with Copa Mundial frames and adjusting the tilt of the lens i again came into the issue of the bottom of the lens hitting my stock when set up correctly. I did try to increase the tilt of the lens to move the lens off the stock but then the frame was pressing into my fore head. I physically couldn't make them work as much as i wanted them.
Frames: There are a multitude of frames available not only in different colors but also in sizes and shapes. Again this is going to be personal taste so my only recommendation is the Copa Mundial series if your not sure due to the increased adjustability. The are several hundred dollars more however so if you can make the static frames work great, I could not and needed the adjustability.
Overall i had a great buying experience with Faveh from Pilla Sport Canada. For anyone looking at these glasses if at all possible i would strongly recommend trying them on before you buy. I know i would have ended up with the wrong frames and lens model if i ordered without being able to try them on.
