Most likely cartridges for big game hunting to find factory ammo on remote shelves?

I shoot three calibres, 270, 30-06 and 300 Win Mag. I have not had a problem finding the calibres on the shelves, although I have to go to a variety of stores. However, while I can find the caliber, I can’t necessarily find the brand, bullet configuration or gr weight I want. Calibre isn’t an issue, preferred round is.

In my part of rural Saskatchewan .308 and .223 are by far the most available in recent years. And as previously posted, 270, 30-06 and 300 Win Mag. are reasonably common, along with 7mm rem magnum. And 6.5 Creedmore is becoming common. 30-30 and .303 are not as common as many would assume. Everything else has been scarce up until recently.

Never been to a gun shop yet where 30-06 and 12 gauge were completely sold out. I'd bet 270win, dirty-30 and 308 would be available everywhere too.

And, at Cabelas and Bass-Pro you get a box of 6.5cm 1/2price when you buy a pair of Birkenstocks and a plaid shirt (sorry, old joke, but I couldn't resist).

I've seen it in the last couple years. For a while 3.5" 12 gauge was the only 12 gauge on the shelf, it might even still be there, I'm not in a flyway though so demand for waterfowl loads is not that high.

Anything that’s a nato round has been easy enough to find, price has gone up though but that’s everything the last couple of years. In my work travels I’ve yet to see .308, 30-06, .223 or 9mm be hard to find. The first to disappear was .303 and 30-30, this spring was the first time I saw 30-30 show back up. The others that were on shelves in the little back woods towns were .270, 7mm Rem mag, 300 win mag, .243, .22lr and a variety of 12g loads.

Up here it was pathetic, for almost a full year there wasn’t any 30-06 available!! And I’m sure a bunch of other calibers!
I reload so not a real issue for me, but I still like to hav a few boxes of factory ammo on hand!!

I called it Walmart ammo

22lr, 223, 308, 303, 3006, 300wm.....12, 20, 410

There are a few that I....could include....270, 6.5 manbun, 243. May kick out a few in individual stores.

A few you won't find. Anything wsm except 300wsm. Anything Rum, Weatherby, PRC. Any rimfire other than 22lr.

303 seems to get increasingly common the further north you go in BC

7 rem mag seems to be more common in sparsely populated Alberta than in "middle of nowhere" places in BC

22 LR, 12 gauge, 223, 22/250, 243, 30-30, 270 Win, 308, 30-06, 7 Rem, 300 Win. Thats the basic gas station list in Saskatchewan, it used to include 270 and 300 WSM as well.

Yep, same here with the addition of the .303 as above. I have seen the .30-30 and .303 disappear, never the .308. Those saying Canadian Tire don’t get north or remote much.

Last month I was in a little gun shop in Merritt and they had anything you would need. They even had 2 types of 303 ammo. Granted it was $41 a box for ppu and $51 for Winchester.

Why go looking for ammo in remote locations when clearly it should have been brought along on the trip.
In other words, Think, Plan, Act........
Tight Groups.

We all plan to succeed, but sometimes #### happens. As an example; I love my STWs and know it would be a great plains game choice but I’m not likely to ever take one to Africa. One baggage screw-up and my custom rifles are just an expensive clubs.

I guess what I’m saying is it might be viewed as another level of planning for the what ifs.

Precisely the reason calibers like 375 ruger will not supplant 375 h$h in Africa. Other new calibers 300 or 7mm prc would be unobtainium in ah of nowhere, good chance of 300wm or 7mm rem mag.

I've got a.few reloader only, never finding ammo calibers. 308nm, 240 Weatherby, 375 rum, 416 Rigby.............

not to offend anyone
But honestly , we go into Sask fishing alot and it's great
Ammo , not so much as
Bingo dobbers...lol

I bought 5 boxes pre pandemic for each of my big game calibers and should be running for at least 5 more years. Can’t say the same for my varmint .17 hmr and .17 wsm offerings. As always, buy it cheap and stack it deep.

the local store is a joke. if you speak with older yukoners they had up to 4 stores for gun and ammo, where we are now? that store is not even shy to say who they were supporting for the last federal election and displayed liberal candidate picture on the biggest building they own ...

that's gross, amazing the power of the microphone, no wonder there's always been so much effort into securing control of it, you can convince people the sky is green with it

I'd love to see what some of you are considering "remote". Here's a starting point...there's one road in, and it's gravel. Bonus points if there is a sign that says "Next Services ###km". Double the points if there is a seasonal road only. Triple if there is no road at all.

If a paved road leads to it, it's not remote.

Having lived in northern NWT and Nunavut, I can confirm this to be accurate as well as the 243 and 30-30 as dgradinaru suggests. Can't recall the 7Mag being that popular but it may have been.

exactly remote might be a different definition depending where you are ... where im hunting remote there is no cell services, nor road (a river might be called a road by some) nor store for sure and the one before reaching the remote might have 308 (it is new since rangers got that caliber), 30-06 22lr and 12 ga ...30-30, maybe some 303 sometimes but that is about it ... i ve seen too some 300 savage left on a side but it was a while ago ...
