I currently have Lee 9mm dies that I bought used some time ago and was thinking to purchase a new set of dies for my new Dillon XL750. I'm currently having some issues with a custom made expander funnel for the 9mm. It expands the case perfectly for my cast boolits to stand straight up for seating without shaving lead however the funnel sticks in the case really bad. That issue aside I'm also maxed out on the sizing die where I have to put the locking nut on the bottom of the press. I was thinking maybe the case was getting oversized causing the case to stick on the expander so I wanted to back it out some but then the case won't plunk in the case gauge or my barrel. It seems I can't find a happy medium. Anyway what are your thoughts on the Lyman die set mentioned. I know it's a question that will get many broad answers because everyone had their prefered brand but I'm just looking for some opinions . Even opinions on the best 9mm sizing die would be appreciated.

I'm not sure which custom expander you're using but I use a MBF powder funnel. It used to stick pretty badly so I LIGHTLY polished it with some polishing compound. That worked well, but I finally gave in and started using One Shot and haven't looked back. Can it be done without One Shot, sure, and I did so for many years, but everything's so much smoother when I apply a little bit of lube to my brass.

I wouldn't change your die set. When it comes to die brands, you can buy them all but you won't see much of a difference (if any). Each have their own quirks/positives/negatives. I started with a Dillon set and, for my purpose, they've served me well. The only singular dies I would consider are a powder check (If that's your thing) and micrometer seater (If you're constantly changing the OAL).

I'm not sure what you mean by oversized when it comes to 9mm. The sizing die should just kiss the shellplate . Sizing adjustment over.

The funnel was made by a fellow in the US. I posted in another forum about a problem I was having with trying to bell for my cast boolits. I was getting shaved lead because the boolits wanted to fall over. He made me a funnel that creates a sort of shelf that the boolit sits on straight up. Works great except if adjusted properly however the funnel sticks in the case so bad sometimes that two hands are required on the handle to release it. It released with such force that the powder in the cases spill all over. I know my cases are to clean and that doesn't help but it's almost the same with dirty cases. I've tried Frankfort Arsenal case lube but I find the powder sticks to the funnel and inside the case creating a mess especially if I need to empty a case for some reason. Where can I get One Shot here in Canada? I read somewhere that it was not available here anymore? I googled and it seems it's out of stock everywhere.

It sounds like your custom funnel replicates the MBF powder funnel, it too creates a shelf helping to keep the bullet aligned. I had the exact same issue. I remember using my fist as a hammer and gently tapping the press arm until the funnel released from the case. Again, a light polishing, dirty(er) cases and One Shot all helped. New brass, even once fired, always seemed to cause much more sticking.

As for One Shot...To be honest, I couldn't tell you where to get it today. I bought several can's from Bass Pro a few years back so I'm not sure how hard it is to find now. Hopefully one of the other members can chime in at point you in the right direction. I don't have any issues with powder sticking when using One Shot.

I did polish the funnel to a mirror finish but it made zero improvement. My cases are really too clean and I'm gonna try to buy a media tumbler and add wax to see if it will help the cases. I currently use a wet tumbler with steel bins so the cases are extremely clean.
I read somewhere that the One #### couldn't be imported to Canada for some reason that I don't remember. I have some Redding Imperial Sizing wax coming today from Amazon that was recommended to apply to the funnel to prevent sticking. I hope it works because I'm not enjoying this new XL750 as much as I was hoping to. I'm sure I will when I eventually get it running SMOOTHLY!!

OP,
Your #2 die's expander creates a ledge for the projectile to set level/straight for seating?

Then sticks inside the case mouth?

If you are taper crimping said 9x19 cases the seat/crimp die will & can NOT remove the step from your expander.

Polish the expander for a .003" press fit & taper crimp to straighten the case mouth for smooth feeding.DONE.

Do you spray the entire case inside and out or just the powder funnel?

I grab a small box, jiggle till most cases stand upright, spray a few shots, swirl and jiggle the cases around in the box and let them dry for a few minutes. I usually do batches of 300-500 cases at a time.

I tumble in a FAT without pins, with a little bit of dish soap and Lemi Shine. Cases come out clean on the outside, clean enough on the inside, and no pins to deal with. I've heard, but cannot confirm myself, that tumbling with a wax-based soap (probably some type of car soap w/ carnuba wax???) can help lubricate the cases. Since you're having a tough time, it might be worth looking into its effectiveness.

It's not feeding in firearms that's the problem, it's the case mouth sticking to that type of expander, which is unfortunately quite common. Here's a picture of the type of expander we're using. It helps to keep the bullets from tilting/toppling while loading and reduces bullet shaving for lead/coated bullets. You can see the small step in the powder funnel:

I stopped at Select Shooting today and Dean was more than kind enough to give me a partial can of One Shot that he had there so I'm gonna give it a try.
My funnel actually has a double step. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

I can't say if the double step is a good or bad thing but maybe, and this is just a wild @ss guess, the design of your funnel requires deeper case insertion which exacerbates the sticking problem these funnels are known for???

Throwing darts blind at this point...lol.

Was was thinking the same thing. Watched a YouTube video the other night where the guy cut o e down and tapered it and he said it eliminated the sticking. So I'm about to try the One Shot on the XL 750 so instead of using the DDA case feeder I'm gonna drop about 6-7 cases in the feed tube. So should I spray the 6-7 cases inside and outside??? I hate that if any spray stuff gets inside the case the powder sticks to everything.

If "On the Edge" is anywhere near the Oliver, Canadian Tire I have two cans of it on the shelf. They won't be getting any more as they are going slowly out of reloading supplies here with my pending retirement. It says "Danger, Extremely Flammable" so getting it shipped through us would probably be a waste of time and money. But if you're close...

I do a light coating inside from a distance (the box method I mentioned previously). The swirling also coats the outside which helps a bit with sizing. I really haven't noticed too much powder sticking with One Shot. Allow the carrier solvent in One Shot to evaporate, do not load "wet" freshly applied cases.

Good luck!

I'm a lonnnnng way away unfortunately but it would be worth it to me to pay for the shipping. I'm in Ontario.

I will get you the Product Number tomorrow. Try to do an Online order with home shipping. I'll talk to the girl Monday (I'm off, but I'll phone her in the morning and go over it with her). Let me know via PM how things are going, I'll keep an eye out.

Thanks so very much. I tried the cases sprayed with the One Shot and although it's not perfect it's a very much improvement over previously. At least it's much more tolerable. I'm getting there.

The expander part of the 750 powder measure should work just fine if adjusted properly. I use One-Shot on all my pistol cases, hose them down liberally then let them dry out a bit. I pray and toss lots. I do big batches. I hope One shot is still available, it's my favorite pistol case lube.

The original funnel would work fine for copper plate projectiles but not so much for my cast boolits. I'm not sure what the deal is with One Shot but I can't find it anywhere!

OP,
Mic the diameter of the steps.
.003" should be sufficient press fit for 9x19 projectiles.

Take a Cratex wheel & polish the "steps" off the expander.

The "STEPS" are expanding the case mouth too large & a taper or roll crimp seater die can NOT remove the step.

I've cast, loaded, shot 10's of thousands of projectiles in pistol & rifle cartridges & never, not once did I need or want a step in my expander plug or to hold projectiles for seating.
