One rifle, one cartridge, one load for everything

Did you ever meet PH that was using a Post 64 Winchester M70? Meaning a push feed action.

I personally knew two. One was Ian Gibson, who I hunted with, and the second was Andrew Dawson, the owner of Chifuti Safaris. Andrew used a Push Feed Model 70 until he traded up to a double and gifted the M70 to an apprentice PH who was working for him as a camp manager. Ian used the 458 until he was killed by an elephant. And before you suggest that his death was a result of the rifle, it wasn't. Just extremely bad luck with an elephant bull that he was trying to get a good look at for a footsore client who was running out of miles. If that fat #### had showed up for his hunt in half-decent shape, my old friend would likely still be around.

Here is Ian Gibson’s PF Lott at 7:18 ish.

Is it surprising to you that a push feed rifle is used by some dangerous game professionals? And hunters??

When you do it for work sentimentality and academic debate of merits largely leaves the picture. It’s usually about what gun you shoot well that you really don’t mind abusing. I gave very little consideration to the aspects I used to debate ardently by the end of outfitting. Now that it’s not work anymore, I find the little things and sentimentality creeping back into my choices. I guess there’s time for it again.

My boot, tent, glass and rain gear choice held a lot more weight than my gun choices when I was busy with it. It didn’t start that way.

Guns, of course, are very personal, but I agree that the type matters little in the hands of a good hunter.

Reliability of boots, trucks, weather, finances often determine how much a gun gets used as you say. But it’s fun playing with them and at the end of the day that’s all that really matters to me. A blend of art and function. Can’t say that about rain gear.

30 06 as I have one . But I’m thinking something just a bit lighter in recoil that can do the same job . I do have a 6.5 Creedmoor but I’m hesitant to use it on Moose although they say most moose in Sweden are taken with the 6.5 x55 .

Oddly enough, the rain gear and boots will take you further and bring you more adventure though. While I fully subscribe clearly, I do find our fascination with guns and their minor distinctions curious.

Guns are only personal to those of us nuts about them, most of the folks that work with them every day lose the sentimentality to them. I guided some former seals one year, one of whom many of the crowd in other forums of this site would quickly recognize. They would easily class amongst the least “gunny” of the people we had out.

One used my Ruger loaner as it was just easier, he didn’t even ask the chambering. None of them could specify a favourite gun or rig at work aside from broad generalities. I’ve worked with two former legionnaires as well, one a member of this forum who was my boss. The gist was asking about work guns is like asking Phillips or Robertson screws. You’ll hear general preferences, a statement that they’ll all do the job, biggest thing is that it’s familiar.

The wild Africa PHs and many of the Alaskans, and even guides I hired aren’t a much different crowd, they’re just work tools. My head guide used a cheap .270 WSM and a $300 shotgun. I bought him a nice stainless rifle, I think he carried it one trip to make me feel better.

9mm can hardly kill a rabbit ! Useless cartridge ! JMO RJ

lol, I know it's an old re-quote but have to disagree useless, wish I could carry one in grizzly country, when you look at pistol cartridges the way I look at most (the numbers not the head stamps) the 9mm has proven why it's the number one pistol cartridge worldwide, it was always in the objective numbers why, interesting article for you here, but look at all things starting with penetration (sd/velocity) then recoil (fbi moved to 10mm but went back to 9mm at some point shortly after) and global availability, most militaries etc. there's a lot to love about it, sure you could kill deer to 100 with carbine

but I'm with you that 9mm doesn't qualify for the op original ask...all hunting in your home province with one set up but just nitpicking for fun about the 9mm as not being totally useless and barely adequate for rabbits ;)

interesting few responses went with .223 and 77gr tmk's, I've been actually applying a little stronger formula for 5 seasons with my grendel burning 30 grains of powder and 123gr boolits no problems to 420 yards so far on mostly non-trophy over 6 species, but if we could have a pistol cartridge as well, the 9 is the one to have imo for many of same reasons one would choose x39 based cartridge or .223 or .308 (global or military supply or commonalities)

Building guns, fantasizing about their use is unfortunately easier than using them. My money would be better spent buying time. As I sit on the basement couch as it’s too hot to do anything…

What happened at AO doesn’t matter here, but if you want to keep stirring the pot, you’ll soon find out what will happen.

Of course not.

While you were gone I’ve been posting and buying/selling without hiccup. If you’re going to keep deleting my posts and infracting me then it is inevitable. No need for the threats.

Take it to PM if you have something you want to say to me.

A quick look through your post history has brought to my attention that you’ve gotten away with wayyyy more than you ever should have. I guess it’s time someone pays better attention.

Take it to PM from here on in.

Here is another guy that hunted extensively with one rifle and cartridge.
