What's everyones favourite 16 gauge shotguns? I'm shooting a Citori Feather Lightening in 16 gauge. I originally bought it as a partridge gun. I'm considering picking up something else for deep woods rabbits so the citori doesn't get too scratched up. Share any picture of your favourite if you have them.

A single barrel hammer gun with a short 2 1/2" chamber, signed Thomas Seymour of London, is great on grouse:

Closely followed by a FN-made Browning Auto-5, with a 2 9/16 chamber, made in 1947-1948. It is quite happy with 2 1/2" shells.

My Winchester model 1987 , 16 guage that was my grandfathers , then my dad, then mine , shot beaver , muskrats, grouse, rabbits, ducks,

I owned a variety of 16 ga over the years but the 2 that I use for sharp tail hunting is a win 97 and. Model 12
I enjoy the 97

That makes 3 of us. Coincidentally, my 1897 was originally bought by my grandfather and passed down through my father to me, too.

Darryl,

Which do you prefer between the model 12 and the 37? I'd say it will come down to finding a nice example of one of them as my next purchase.

I really like my ‘47 Winchester Model 12 with a 28” barrel that someone added a rib to. Moneymaker possibly? Rib on the receiver goes all the way back to the stock. -0.015” (LM) choke is a good compromise for most of my uses. Was a full choke with 0.029” constriction originally. Have a checkered High Plains straight grip butt stock on it. Hair over 6-1/2#s that shoots where it looks. Very nice shotgun!

I also use an AYA #2 Round Body. 28” IC and Mod chokes, splinter forend, straight grip buttstock with twin triggers. Heck of dandy pheasant and open country bird gun. 6-1/4# and the round body and straight grip stock carry very well. Well regulated too.

Model 12 shotguns are very good guns. BUT some late model 12 16 gauges do not like modern 2 3/4" shells. Some especially do not like euro hulls available now. Even 2 3/4" chambered 16 bore model 12 guns can have issues with modern ammo. I have only had one gun that would cycle all shells put through it. The rest need the ejection port opened and some other tinkering. Having said that the Ithaca 37 feeds everything you can put through it including euro type hulls. So if you are considering a purchase and don't want to tinker with a gun to get it running I would suggest the Ithaca 37. They also run a little cheaper than a model 12 to boot.

My favorite 16s? Sometimes you have to sell them before you realize how much you liked them.

In no particular order....
Win model 12........always on the lookout for the right one. Should not have sold my first.
Manufrance Ideal......have owned 5 in 16....liked them all.....kept selling because I was trying to find the perfect one. Still am.
Fox Sterlingworth in 16.......almost a perfect SxS with 28" barrels. had two, again sold because I'm trying to find the perfect configuration.

On the lookout for a Lindner made Charles Daly Diamond in 16.......I have the 12 (two actually) and the 20.....need the 16 with 28" barrels.

Have a Remington model 31 in 16 gauge that I really like. Built on 20 gauge frame. Nice handling pump, super smooth. Like it better than model 12 Winchester I owned.

Nothing too exotic but we do have a pair of 16 gauge here. My wife has a Ithaca 37 pump and I have a Cooey 840. Handload for both of them on an old tried and true Lee Loadall.

Ithaca model 37 is my only experience with 16 g. Not pretty, but has accounted for lots of birds. I was tempted by an English Henry Atkin 2 1/2 inch boxlock sxs in excellent condition with good dimensions for a good price at a gun show this year, but was reluctant to get into loading for 16g, it's enough of a hassle finding 12g components these days.
