Favorite 16 gauge shotguns

Ithaca model 37 is my only experience with 16 g.

^the only 16ga I own, mine was my great uncle's built while WW2 was going on. (if I've dated it correctly) I've taken it out for grouse but didn't shoot any that day. It's only shot clay birds, but points beautifully and is surprisingly light-feeling for an all steel/wood gun. Haven't hunted grouse much in the last couple of years, and don't want this old family gun getting soaked.

Winchester Model 12 - 1934 vintage - 2 3/4” shells, factory Mod choke, with solid rib. My go to gun for grouse and pheasants. An absolute pleasure to shoot.

I also have a mid 1930's Model 12, 16 ga, solid rib with factory modified choke. Still in very fine original condition, perfect upland gun as Winchester built these 16 ga on the 20 ga frame. I agree, pleasure to carry and shoot

Only 16ga Ive ever had. Hopefully I get some birds with it next week.

I probably should have a 16 of some variety, but I haven't found the right one yet. There was an 870 on the used rack at a semi-local gun store but I couldn't get the clerk lady to talk to me, so I left.

If you are looking for an all around 16 bore for everything from ducks to deer to grouse the Browning BPS pump is as good as any. A Little over 7 pounds (no weight advantage over most 12 bore pumps) but super well built and they have Invector screw in chokes. Now discontinued they show up quite often on the used market. I like mine for ducks and late season grouse when shots are long and walks are short.

Why would a person want to shoot a 16 that carried like a 12? The whole point is to get the gun on a smaller frame to change the carrying and handling to something more agreeable. There's a Rizzini 16ga O/U on Prophet River that is 6.8lbs and would be way more enjoyable.

We sell a lot of 16's. The owner here loves to shoot 16.
We have lots in stock in Tristar Grulla, AYA and more including lots of Citori guns:

Some people don't worry much about a 1/4 of a pound if the gun has screw in chokes and is modern built. Like I said I use mine for ducks (very little carrying) and late season grouse with SHORT walks.

I've got a lightweight Remington 1100 in 16ga, mod fixed barrel, its quite an old auto loader, and seams to be slimer and lighter than my 12ga semi.
And two u/o fair's, one was built to my measurements', the 1100 is my primary waterfowl gun, and just got three Canada's this morning jump shooting a couple ponds, used to take the 16 u/o for upland, but now using a fair SXS 20ga most of the time.
Just sat down and am looking threw my 16ga Manual from Ballistic products, as am in need of a few more ITX 16ga loads, so checking charge weights.

As far as I know, the 16g BPS were built on the same scaled down 20g frame.

I had a Tobin 16 Gauge many years ago and it was a gift to me . sold it to a buddy not thinking . foolish move on my part .

I have a 16ga Tobin "black diamond" that is very similar to the one posted earlier. Its a nice gun with unusually nice wood.

As for my favourite 16ga gun...thats a very tough call for me. I LOVE my model 12, I LOVE my modern A5 sweet sixteen, and I LOVE my Theime and Schlegelmilch Nimrod SxS....

Only have one 16g left and its my Beretta SxS. It holds a special place in my collection although I can’t shoot it worth a damn.

I’d like to add another 16g double gun to my collection at some point, possibly another Citori.

My favorite 16ga is an Italian double I can not afford. However I do really like the lowly aya 16ga I have. Checks most the boxes. Fits perfectly. Patterns well and right where I look. Carrys nice. Great case colors. Dual triggers and although not an English grip the pistol grip with raised cheek piece just feels great. I bought a couple boxes of bismuth so it will hopefully see some duck hunting this fall
