some people give bad advice to first time hunters here.

Does not mean he didn't have a POL. I've been shooting/hunting for 24 years and only got a PAL 5 years ago. So there.:)

I am sure you are the exception to the case. Just so you know what we are talking about, here:

Newbie alert. Finally got my PAL, and am pumped about hunting this year. I did a quick search, but couldn’t find a similar thread, so here goes:

I’m looking at buying my first rifle. Due to limited budget, I want to get one rifle that will last for years, and can be used for just about anything. I’ll be out for deer, moose, elk, black bear, and eventually antelope and sheep.

Can I get away with one rifle for all of these? (Though in the future, I know I’ll build my collection - for now the pocketbook dictates things.)

Although I’m sure most of my shots will be under 200 yds, I'll be practicing my longer shots for when the need arises. I was thinking of a Rem 700 SPS SS (decent value) in either 300 WM or 7mm Rem Mag; I figure either should pack enough punch for the longer shots (esp. for antelope and sheep), their recoil isn’t too bad, and factory ammo selection should be good (I don't reload right now).

Your thoughts are appreciated - 300 WM or 7mm Rem Mag?

Don't have to reach too far, you make it pretty easy.

I think you are intentionally picking at threads here, because no one can be as daft as you.

By me saying "you won't get any praise from me." is another way of saying "I disagree with what you are saying."

Gatehouse you prove again and again in this thread why CGN is more of a peanut gallery sometimes then a useful resource.

Instead of contributing your opinion to this thread, you reach for things between the lines and throw it out as a borderline attack. I'm sick of this bickering.

This post was started because people give bad advice to first time hunters and shooters and I'm trying to raise awareness.

Dude, most people here older than 28 have hunted and shot before the PAL's came along. His post says nothing about being new to GUNS, only that he's pumped about hunting, and can now ACQUIRE a gun. You don't know how old this guy is.

No, some of us did not give bad advice!

The newbie asked a bad, vauge and/or obtuse question.

I gave an accurate answer to that question.

Want me to break it up for you?

people ask questions because they are looking for answers not abuse. i guess it has been along time since any of you needed any help. no one wants you to make a decision for them they would however like to benefit from your experience. this forum is about a lot of things and one of them is comraderie. perhaps that needs to be taken into consideration. the topic may have been gone over again and again but the volume of posts and threads and info is staggering to saty the least. so some of you may be asked to repeat yourselves. that i would think would be flattering. it isnt easy to break into this fraternity so alittle more patience for those of us who are young and new on this journey we need you old hands to help us sift throught the volumes of info that is available. i wish to say thank you to all those who have helped me with advice and helped me to learn how to do research on my own. i believe that it has helped me a great deal.
great reply, quietkid... I completely agree.

If there was a head shaking smiley, I would insert one.

Rather than daft, I'd call myself "unappreciative of your efforts"

I am sure that prior to replying to a thread, many members of CGN think "Is this post going to agree with the idealology of the_big_ mike?"

I just dont' happen to be one of them;)

Gatehouse you prove again and again in this thread why CGN is more of a peanut gallery sometimes then a useful resource.

CGn becomes a peanut gallery when the topic is redundant, silly, or ghey. Like this thread.

You may be "sick of bickering" but I'm sick of people whining when not everyone on the intraweb agrees with them.;)

It sounds to me that you started this thread because you didn't understand a joke, but, I'll be happy to give my oppinion on the topic:

Anyone that comes onto the internet and asks a newbie question is going to get many responses, some practical, some good, some not practical, some poor advice. Sometimes we make jokes here, on the WWW, too...However, anyone that has passed the PAL course is an adult, and they need to use thier senses to come to a proper conclusion. That is thier responsibility, nobody elses'.

Before the internet, how did new hunters select appropriate hunting weapons? (Assuming they had no direct mentor like a father or uncle to help them out)

THey talked to other hunters, gun store owners and read hunting magazines. Now, if they were smart, they paid attention to the majority of good informants, who suggested they use something practical, liek a 308, a 270 etc.

If they were in love with the idea of SUPREME POWER they ignored the wise advice of thier elders and ended up with a 300Weatherby magnum, which kicked the snot out of them and cost $$$ to feed.

Now, some people will take the advice that a 300Weatherby isn't practical, and then others just have to find out for themselves.

Much of the internet forums have turned into a babysitting service. New comers want someone ELSE to decide what they should buy. They dont' want to accept that it is THIER responsibilty to get somethign that is practical for THEM. They want an answer, and they want it now. They don't want to word thier questions properly, so good advice can be given. They don't even want to do a search, possibly because they dont' believe than anyone has ever asked the same question in CGN's history.

I am fine with giving advice, some people will take it, some won't, but it's up to them to seperate the wheat from the chaff, and threads like this seek to absolve them of any personal resposibility.

Happy now?

Here is my post below. Perhaps you can read beyond the .416 remark?

Some people on this website give bad advice to new hunters and shooters. The most recent example:

An individual just got his PAL and getting into hunting this year. He does not reload, has NOT owned any firearms before.

Yet, people suggest .416 (apparently its a joke...), .260, .280, .35whelen.

Well, next time, before I post a topic, I'll ask myself "Is this post going to fit within the standards of gatehouse?"

You could, but I don't really care.;)

What you should remember is that when you start a redundant, silly or ghey thread, you may not get the response that you had hoped for. :)

either way why treat him like a second class citizen for asking a question. if the info he is looking for is available somewhere already post a link to the thread and let the individual find their own way. embrace each other brothers we are all we have out there so we better get along!

I liked it better when you were a ....well...........quiet kid.

(sorry couldn't resist. yes it was intended tobe humourous;):D)

So we are discussing the thread created by Grains ?

I thought the advise posted was good, and someone made a joke about a 416, and I think 99% of the world could tell it was a joke....

What the hell is this thread about anyways ?
