Why would anyone want something like this?

Oh I know the farm boys around here, been on a few groundhog extermination runs they do in the spring. No shortage of targets there lol.

that and range trips sounds like a real winner, I had a couple tikka varmint stainless in .204 that did 1" groups at 250 yards with factory federal 39 gr Sierra blitzkings, slow learner though that's why two of them, they don't 'hunt' well, sold both, if you lived in country would be great for taking them from the deck also so I guess it's a 3-trick pony in that regard, just too heavy/long etc. for a calling/hunting or throw out the truck window rig, nice looking rifle, never heard of or seen one of those

They were made in 222/223/22-250/220 swift/243/308 only. Lots of overlap with the 22 bores which is odd. I would like to find one in 308 to go with this one.

Just finished a similar build over the Summer.

Started life as Varmint HB 26” barrelled action, dumped it into a HS Precision Stock (Spruce/Black), Trigger Tech Primary, Vortex HST 4x16-44 (ya I know..).

Voila instant 700P.

Just a fun, range and/or if I’m brave enough to carry it again like this year (it’s 11lbs all in) next year field rig.

That set-up would be excellent for prairie poodles. A 243 Winchester loaded with 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip, sitting and calling coyotes, you're in business!

Some guys got all the luck! I don't want this but I'd sure as hell buy it if I came across it. Shoot until the barrel falls off then great platform to start a build.

Not sure I'll get a chance to stretch her legs this fall, deer opens this weekend. It hammers the Hornady 87gr BTHP into tight little ragged holes.
Got a more capable scope coming this week and will get it zeroed at 100 again. As soon as I can I'll get out to this spot we have targets set up to 600m and see how it performs, but I suspect 600m won't be an issue.

Oh ####...was she rusty? Looked like there was a bit under where the scope bases were, but the rest looked ok.
That was still a pretty good deal ;)

Some pitting in the bore after I scrubbed out the orange. I'll see how it shoots soon enough

Hitzy, the LTR shoots really well. 50gr Vmax over Benchmark resulted in a 0.5moa 5 shot group and 55gr Hornady SP over IMR 3031 was 0.8moa with 2 different powder charges

I have the same rifle only in 22-250 and it loves of all things 36gr. Barnes Varmint grenades'. Biggest problem I had with the rifle is the back shroud turning. Sent the rifle to a guy in Sask. as requested by the factory LOL he was less then helpful but I guess spring planting got in the way? Final fix was to pull up on the tiny little hatchet shaped shroud retaining fixture, Voila problem solved, weak spring? or a small burr.

It is a great rifle and you will enjoy it, but yes it is heavy.

My CZ527 shoots the 50gr Grenades really well too, they need a fairly fast twist due to no lead and the length of them, but they are cheap and apparently pretty destructive lol

Have one in .223 with a 1in9” barrel twist… for its time a little faster than the common 1in12” twist. I understand that these are Wilson stainless barrels employed by Winchester but as a previous poster mentioned I have also seen the barrel source attributed to Schneider. They are certainly heavy. My first centerfire rifle was a Rem Mohawk then Sako etc and along the way a few Remingtons — but never a Winchester until this rifle - I am now sorry I didnt pay more attention to Winchesters.

Yeah they got some heft to them.
From what I read the full profile barrels were Wilson, later on they came with fluted stainless that could be Schneider or just Winchester made as they used the same process to cut the rifling.
Something about the way the Wilson bores are cut is how folks down South determined the maker.
If you ever decide to part ways with it let me know lol, I may go for the whole set.

Winchester made excellent barrels too.

My first built custom Rifle was using a old Mauser WW2 98 Action - I rounded up a M70 Winny 26 “ Heavy Barrel in 243Win with a shot out throat , So I Set I set back the barrel and rechambered it in the same 243 Win . Fit and glass bedded it in a new Herters wood stock . I mounted a new Leupold 12x scope
One if the best shooting rifles I have every owned and shooting Hornady 75 gr HP s it accounted fir a lot of dead paper targets and a pile of marmots and woodchucks and a few dozen yotes too and a couple of deer . This was back in about 1972. RJ

My 1966 Model 70 Varmint 243 Win is from an era most Winchester fans hate. But is very accurate and looks decent too. Pic for fun!

From what the Winchester forums tell me online, they were Wilson Arms barrels.
I guess they use to supply barrels for Cooper as well back then when Cooper had a good reputation, then something went south with Cooper (they call it Coopegate lol) and Wilson Arms bought them out.

Great score!

I bought one off the EE in 308. Had a McMillan Winchester target stock upgrade and a jewel trigger. Brings it closer to the sharpshooters than the heavy varmint configuration. I just bought a rail for it and added a scope. Looking forward to trying out this old cult classic rifle, oh and yes it’s a Wilson barrel from when they were essentially a custom barrel.

Sort of the Winchester version and the predecessor/inspiration ti the Remington 5R milspec.

Great find!
