Which brands/models would you say are premium bolt action rifles offerings that would slot in above the likes of the Winchester Model 70's, Ruger M77's, Remington 700s, Tikka T3X's etc etc when it comes to fit and finish?

I'd like to purchase a real premium bolt gun for an upcoming milestone that's higher quality than those mentioned above but not quite priced like a Rigby Big Game, H&H etc.

What would you say falls within that category?

Sako 85/90? Weatherby Mark V? Park West Arms?

What else?

I have a Heym Express in mind but that's a significant jump in price over the Model 70s et al. Wondering if there's much that falls between those two.

For example I'm also considering the PWA SD-76 which is about half the price of the Heym.

The new Mauser 98. A step above anything in my books. Just perfection. I want one in 8x57, but the price is so prohibitive. Tenda carries them, but they all sell out in days.

Oddly enough, when I think of going upscale... I often find myself lusting for a 1903 in 6.5×54 Mannlicher-Schönauer

Custom Mauser

Echols legend

Hagn single shot

Blaser or merkel kipplauff

Are they hiring where you work by the way? I could use a bison hunt and a griesbach custom.

I'll second the mannlicher though, I've owned some more expensive guns and only later MS but they really are pieces of art. Never had anything that compares. Oberndorfs seem close

If I had that outlay I'd get an oberndorf mauser sporter, a commercial ross and a nice ms full stock from the turn of the 20th century and reloading bits for a lifetime for all of them

I would talk to Karl at KS Arms, he can custom build the the compete rifle for you.

Either one looks at building something similar to those nice higher grade wooden stocked Safari/hunting rifles and ends up with similar performance as in the 40's-50's or one goes modern high end components. I have made myself a Mauser 1909 with carbon fibre stock as an "old meets new" which is a fantastic rifle but also built two ultra modern hunting rifles in all carbon build. For years I was very sceptical about carbon fibre barrels but have changed my mind a bit especially after building a lightweight 300wm that shoots so well. We have shot targets at 1200m as well as deer off-hand at around 100m and deer at over 400m. There is just such a wow factor when handling this rifle. The materials used as well as the balance of the rifle reduce felt recoil even though we use 208gr at 2800fps. I am convinced the carbon barrel as well as carbon stock are responsible for the recoil dampening.

I really like the look for the ParkWest Arms (formerly Dakota) rifles in 416 Rigby.

What are some comparable brands around that level? Maybe I should be focusing on the premium American brands vs European?

High grade wood stock, blued finish, controlled round feed, big bore chamberings.
