243 vs 6.5 creedmore.

Im gonna open up a can of worms here. I am looking to purchase a light calibre rifle. I have narrowed it down to the 243 ans 6.5 creedmore. I'm a 30.06 guy and havent shot much smaller. Comparisons on line show nearly idemtical balistics woth a slight adadvantage to the 6.5 at longer distances. Our intent is mainly deer and some target shhoting. 6.5 seems to cost on adverage 300-400 more. Is there any advantage that im not seing? Pros and cons to each thanks.

factory ammo or do you reload?

Only thing that pissed me off with the 6CM and 6.5CM is not too long after they were standardized and released on the public with factory 1/8 twists, Hornady/Sierra/Berger started making heavier VLD's that require a 1/7 twist. So a bunch of #######s like me already had purchased 1/8 rifles in both cartridges, now many are offering 1/7 factory twist for both.
Almost like they took a page out of iPhone marketing.

Did you try them?

I have successfully stabilized 6mm bullets marked for 1:8 in a 1:10

1:8” is perfect for 140gr class bullets in 6.5CM. Why do people think otherwise? I had lots of success to the mile with 140gr Berger VLD’s with a 1:8” 28” barrel. And even with 6.5x47L with 139gr Lapua Scenars to 1500m in a 1:8”.

I have 2x 243s now. I think they are effective rounds.
Killed a few deer and bear with them.
100g partitions 3000-3100fps.

I haven’t had to shoot anything past 200yrds with them. But put the bullet in the proper spot and the animals expire at the same rate as hit with my 375 ruger.

I shoot 87g v-max for practice. They are cheep and easy to get.
Brass is cheap too.

If I was to get into the 6.5 stuff it would be a 260rem or 6.5-06. As brass is easy to form.

2000 yards with a 243? ...... That's some awesome feat right there.

The 243, when addressed correctly, is an absolute monster. It isn’t too much, or too little when looking for a deer rifle. It is the most, for least.
A 243AI is the second dirtiest trick a feller can play, when looking for a round that will absolutely crush deer.

Yes it is. :)

When I started looking at the ballistics of the round with various bullets I was shocked to see that it smokes the 308W from the muzzle, all the way out to the 800-1000yd point where 308 hits the sonic barrier, and then the 243 keeps going and going. Really I only tried my 243 at such extreme distance because the ballistic calculator said it would be supersonic and I had a location that was possible to shoot that far.

The biggest drawback with the 243 at extreme range is the little bullets sometimes don't create much impact sign.

Sshhhhhh.... Don't let your facts and experience get in the way of others guesses, opinions, and pretend!

Sounds like ahhh whole lawt awf Texas elevayshun.

20 moa rail and a scope with an adequate dial..
It's well beyond the comprehension of the MPBR crowd.

It's been done lots. And done very well.

Correct. 20 MOA rail and a Tasco Super Sniper were what I used. I don't remember if I had to use the reticle dots for elevation. It was years ago that I did that.

Monster lol. Good for crushing roe deer.

I never used my 243 for deer but I did shoot a number of coyotes with it and can tell you it kills like the Hammer of Thor. No coyote ever took a single step after taking a 70gr Ballistic Tip at 3600 fps anywhere in the chest area. I have no doubt that with suitable bullets the 243 would kill most any deer.

It's a good round for coyotes now since their fur is basically worthless.

I have used standard federal blue box 100gr soft points in my .243 for a few years now...bang, dead deer.

140's work fine up to 1-10. It's when you go heavier (and this works for 22, 6mm, 6.5, 7mm's etc) then you will require faster twists. - dan
