A young bull elk with my Ruger No. 1S in 338 Win Mag. I was shooting 210 grain Nosler Partitions on top of 71 grains of IMR 4350, lit by CCI 250 primers, in Winchester cases. I was drawn for any-### elk on Camp Wainwright, Alberta. This is an Alberta resident only draw that coincides with the annual deer and moose hunt on the base. There is a three day primitive weapon hunt at the start, followed by two weeks of hunting....when drawn for elk, you get the whole period to hunt, less the two Sundays...there is no hunting on Sundays for anyone, regardless of what species you are drawn for.
A good friend went with me and we headed to the eastern part of the base, which is designated as walk-in hunting only off of the main roads and trails. You may use your vehicle to recover an animal should you shoot one. I had a plan to move west from our starting point and then hook north...the wind was west, north west, so it was in our favor. This area is a favorite for the elk, as they like to cross through there on their way into the Impact Area, where they are safe, as hunters are not allowed in there. We had only been on foot for about 20 minutes, moving from high spot to high spot, when wee spotted two bulls. The bigger one was in some trees and a clear shot wasn't available, so I lined up on the smaller bull and touched off a shot. He spun 180 degrees, went about 20 yards and went down. We walked over, did the picture thing and got to work. We were driving away by 10:00 AM. Registered him at the Check Station and then off to home where we got him hung and skinned. Done by noon-ish.
