Low cost scoped slug shotgun for wife

You did that with a synthetic stock? I could see it with a wood stock but unsure if the synthetic stock can be cut down like that.

You can see how he recoil pad now overhangs at the toe.

Comparison to a factory length wood stock. I took about 3/4" off, probably could have gone a full inch but don't quote me on that. It doesn't seem like much but it's really noticeable when I run the pump. Chopping the plastic stock was supposed to be a sort of proof of concept with the intention of chopping that wood one, but I haven't gotten around to buying a recoil pad for the wood one (it's only been like 7 years.... lol)

Hundreds of rounds later, no issues. Hacksaw to cut it, sandpaper taped to my desktop to sand it square, make the holes a bit deeper for the recoil pad screws and it was good to go.

I had an idea for if the screw holes for the pad weren't reusable too. I was going to cut a chunk of hockey stick handle and epoxy it into the rear of the stock. Didn't have to so no idea how viable that plan is in reality though.

I really did not think that would work, hmm.

20ga guns are hard to come by it seems, but I think that a 12ga slug gun would be a quick way to have her no longer want to come hunting.

I have to do some digging, maybe I can find a Maverick 88 bantam and a 500 cantilever barrel in Canada, would be around $650 but have the shorter stock from the factory and cost about the same as a 20ga package with only the iron sight barrel or a stock that I would have to chop down still.

Just a thought - on your 12G are you using a Limbsaver, esp with slugs ? I have a couple short 12Gs - a pump and a semi - and after the first time out w-slugs, I dropped a couple LS on 'em. I'm only 5'6" and 160, prob a bit more than your wife, but ... also 73+.

She does not even want to and really cannot keep my 12ga 870 on target, just too heavy.

I know, tell her to work out and move to the garage, ha ha.

Any opinions on shotguns for a small and recoil sensitive shooter?

The background, I got her a 20ga Win 1300 many moons ago, she hunted a few times with it but really got in to things this year. She does not like iron sights, I get that but will also work with her to shoot more and learn them.

She was asking about a scoped gun but ones with shorter lengths of pull are few and far between.

My thought at the moment would be a Maverick 88 Bantam and a cantilever Mossberg 500 barrel for it then drop a low power scope on top, should be just over 6lbs, can this even be found?

I've ran into this with my girlfriend, she tried hunting for the first couple times when we first got together, now almost 10 years later she's really into hunting, especially shotgun hunting. She too though, needed guns that were short and light, with minimal recoil. I won't dabble into the rifle world, but with shotguns I ultimately (or maybe fate would have it), she got a Benelli Nova Youth (now called compact) pump 20ga. I say how fate would have it, because her granny won it at a charity event and granny doesn't shoot/own firearms, so she got it. Not the cheapest shotgun on the market, but it has a few pros to it. It's short and light, 12.5" LOP, 24" barrel, the stroke of the pump is short, and the receiver is drilled and tapped to take a scope or sight mount (red dot, reflex site, etc). Overall, theyre just great guns. 3" 20ga shells come in a variety of lead and none-toxic shot, many different kinds of slugs and they use the benelli/beretta mobile choke system, which has a huge after market availability. They come in at around 6.5lbs, so with optic (depending) you'd push it just over 7lbs.

I looked at them too, but a very high cost to make it just a slug gun, the barrels there are $550 for a rifled 20ga barrel :O

"Small and recoil sensitive." In her case I think a properly suited gun is your most important aspect. Start your search with a Youth/Compact/Lady configured shotgun. And that means a shorter stock AND a shorter barrel, otherwise you have a very muzzle-heavy gun.

Try to find a used Remington 11-87 Youth 20 gauge, as one option. The old Winchester 1300/1500 semis could be had in 20 gauge deer configurations, but not sure if there was a Youth model. Receivers can be D&T for scope mounts easily enough.

I haven't read all the 33 posts but I saw a YT vid of just using a rifled choke and getting 5-6" @100 accuracy with a low-cost sg. Lots cheaper than an extra barrel. And I can do 5" @ 50 with just the bead on my 18" Hatsan Marine pump @ $400.

She has a Winchester 1300 now that I cut the stock down. I got a slug barrel with iron sights on it, but she is not well versed in using irons and has asked for a scope. Personally, she should just learn how to shoot irons and go with it for the week a year that she hunts with this barrel, the pushes are always in daylight so low light is not of real concern.

I could drill and tap that receiver and mount a scope but then she would lose it for waterfowl and upland as using a scope on that would suck.

The thought was to get a Maverick 88 and a Mossy 500 barrel for it, 20ga with the compact stock, then take the Win 1300 and put the full size stock back on it and I will use the dang irons and have a 6.5lb slug gun rather than dogging with a 9lb 870.

I was wondering is anyone else had feelings on low cost 20ga guns for ladies. I was thinking about a rifled choke but then still have to drill and tap the receiver and make it permanently a slug gun.

Was given a contact for a compact 870 20ga :D, pink camo too, so she is stoked.

How did that 20g 870 work out for her? I just saw a 20g Turkey barrel at a gun store in the southern Kootenays, 20” smooth bore with rifle sights and threaded for chokes, let me know if you want the info on where it is.
