Truck Hunter Rant

To each their own I guess ; but not really sure how a hunter can be aware of their surroundings , and deer movement , from the cab of a truck ......but then again , I have never tried hunting from a vehicle , so I don't really know ?

That’s the level of immersion driving around and shooting an animal in front of your truck requires, the truck hunter doesn’t not need to be in tune with his senses as they are already filled with the sounds of xm satellite radio and the smells of old spilled beer, nuclear 7-11 hot dog farts and the half eaten chip bags on the center console

You must have been a “truck hunter” as you know all the traits except it’s hunt camp beans and not hotdogs that’s causes the fragrance.

Only studied from afar like the original post, as they pull into the cutblocks, tunes a blazing and doors a slammin, fully camoed slapping in their clipazines.

So you’re driving to your planned spot to still hunt or whatever and you see a shooter buck in the cut block you’re driving past, you’re saying you’re not going to shoot it and cut your tag?

Truck hunting is like trolling in a lake but on land, pretty boring and unrewarding regardless of success. Take away their wheels and that lots back to being basket weavers and berrypickers. I don’t know how well browning and vortex stickers adhere to baskets, might be an issue

Trolling is an intelligent, productive fishing method in many circumstances.

I personally never truck hunt. It just has none of the things that make hunting interesting to me. That being said I don’t care if that’s the way someone else likes to hunt and gets enjoyment out of it. To each their own.

I think as hunters we need to support each other. What I really find annoying is the whole arguing about all the different ways people like to hunt and how they aren’t really hunting. Shooting at game “x” amount of yards away isn’t really hunting, shooting with a rifle isn’t really hunting, hunting with a muzzle loader that isn’t a flintlock isn’t really muzzle loader hunting, hunting over a bait isn’t hunting, etc, etc.

Now, all that being said, I do find it annoying when I hike in the dark for an hour to get back into a spot and then spend an hour stalking a herd of mule deer only to have some guy in an old rattling diesel super duty come pounding across the prairie even though they see you there and blow the whole herd and the buck I was after running to the next RM lol.

"I only want fellow citizens who access the backcountry, to be allowed to pursue interests that align with my particular worldview and in a manner approved by me"

"Govern us harder, Daddy"

As opposed to sitting in a blind or up a tree for 10 hrs?

And a deer in the box.

My hunting experience of over 50 yrs says the exact opposite of what you say. I've still hunted , bush push hunts, blind sits and just plain walk & stock as well as drove thousands of pick-up miles in a truck...and if I'm hungry, seriously needing meat...a pick-up seat is where you will find me every time.
Now, I relize road or any vehicle hunting doesnt fit everybodies sense & sensibilities and if you want to "get one with nature" for your hunting experience I get that but I buy my license the same as you do and will hunt the way I get the best results if it is a meat need.

Beat me to it.
Grew up right off the South Boundary of CFB Suffield. Tell me that you didn't arrive in a truck? Last two Elk I shot were spotted with a truck and involved a 10 step away from it ( someone else blew a foot off... straightened up their mess ) and about a 400 yd walk.
Folks abuse it, but when you are hunting in Semi-arid desert and need to get one ( need to was when I was a kid...how dad fed us for the most part) you need wheels. Used to sit at CP Lakes on the CFB Suffield boundary...they would walk in there...you could sit and get one. Lots of times they can see you coming for a mile, they pay no attention to a truck though.
I don't consider it hunting for the most part...sorta like folks lofting at deer over 500 yds...you are shooting.
Never went out this year; numbers are down, give them a break. I don't play those games anymore anyhow.
If you are hunting to eat...a truck is acceptable in my world.
But for the Love of God... at least get out and walk away from it for the shot. It ain't a gopher for Christ's sake.

Today saw tracks on a 1/4 of ours, son followed them, poachers driving the area's where animals bed. Chased other's off our land this yr that had they bothered to stop and asked would have gone out and Showed them where they could get their animal if were willing to walk. (Big deer, Seriously, BIG deer).

I loved hunting Wainwright. It was like a bonus hunt. Sort of frustrating perhaps, but an extra hunt.

I always preferred walk/stalk. Truck hunters have gotten me a lot of game over the years, they push the animals without even seeing them, right to where I can shoot them.

Honestly, since moving to Sk I find it tough. Here wherever game happens to be standing there's food/cover water. I haven't figured it out yet. Here the best chance of success appears to be a blind and wait. Tough for someone who spent their life stalking.

Far as the OP, Wainwright is IMPO like a bonus hunt, just spend some time on googlearth prior, see where the citiot's are driving and don't be there. Was never skunked at Wainwright.

Seriously, only things I miss about AB are the hunting draw system and trout fishing. RELISH in being able to hunt Wainwright. You don't realize how good you have it.

I cannot even hear the truck in the video, ha ha.

Where I hunt there are tractors constantly, dump trucks smashing tail gates, dogs, guns going off, etc, the deer do not care.

Just go out and hunt and let others hunt.

This guy does not even know if dude is going hunting, maybe he is just parking off the road with his sweet heart.

Gotta love how everyone takes everything as a personal attack on them.

Pretty common to see people driving around the bush around here all times of the year, between hikers, firewooding, forestry workers/planters, equipment maintenance, etc etc etc the woods can be busy. I know people that just go out on the quad/SxS/dirt bikes for a rip, no hunting involved.

I used to hunt with a guy who wanted to ban all snowmobiles because they were too loud for his hunt. I looked at him like he was an idiot, because he was. I said "Do you really think that they will ban hunting and shooting on public land before they banned snowmobiles?".

Some people are just dense.

I expect this guy was hunting Crown land, others can also use it, suck it up and stop being a baby.

That’s just it, crown land is for everyone to use regardless of the time of year. I try not to worry about the little things in life, like if some guys are out truck hunting or just tearing around in the Ute while I’m doing my thing.

My opinion, that bike, sled, truck, hiker, etc, may just push the largest buck I have ever seen in my life my way, so get ready.

Get over yourself.

I'd give my left nut to be able to go back in time twenty years to "truck hunt" with my grandfather just one more time.

True that, I saw it on the last day of the season this year. I had already cut my wt buck tag a week or two prior and was out trying to catch a late season bear on the move, no sign in the area I see them in the late fall hitting the rose hips and snow berries so I hiked to the top of this big knoll/bump I always wanted to get up into. Beautiful spot, tons of game trail and as I’m up there I overlook 2-3 trucks buzzing around the area, start heading back down to where I park and as I get close to the truck another vehicle on the road comes through and it pushed a nice 3x4 or 4x4 wt buck into the block below where I parked. Would’ve been an easy 160-200m shot from where I was if I hadn’t already cut my tag, nice size shooter buck.
