.223 or 22-250 for coyote

oh man, please dont advocate .17 HMR for coyotes

thats like advocating .22 Hornet for deer... yes itll kill them, but there are cartridges that do a much better job. .17 HMR is designed for <15lb critters.

does a .17 HMR even have enough energy to punch a hole in a coyote past 100yds?.

Hornaday Varmint express ammo shows 130lbft at 100yds so thats what 70lbft at 150yds is that enough energy to effectivly drop a yote?.

and again the most effective coyote round is the .22-250 end of story.

you missed the "Coyote" part if you want to shoot them with a .375 H&H then be my guest its better then shoothing them with a .17hmr or .22lr atleast you know they are going down.

I just took exception with "most effective" without any qualifiers.

Within 200 yards coyotes would be equally dead if they were shot bya .223 or a .22-250. So the .223 would be "most effective" too

Todd Bartell got the best answer so far: Up to 250 yds there's no real difference in performance. After that the bigger cartridge shoots flatter for a bit before it also starts to drop off. For a coyote cartridge its hard to beat a .223. For a 400 yd gopher gun the .22-250 has an edge.

a 400 yard gopher gun, the 243 has an edge :D re bartell's statement and yours,
Yup... Gotta third that. the 223 is cheaper to shoot, and if your shooting your gun more often, your ranges will likely increase. Both will kill vermin well beyond what most shooters can. Its about personal preference. what do you want more if both will work?

I'll definitely give the 22-250 the edge over the .223 on the longer shots, no argument there even though I stepped "down" to the .223. But the .17HMR ?? come-on, if you live in southern Alberta when the wind kicks up, the .17's are in the closet.

what about a .220 swift it out does the .223 and the .22-250?

With factory loads the .220 Swift doesn't do much if anything more than the 22/250. With handloads it sure does.
I've shot hundreds of coyotes, and know damn well that the 22/250 kills a lot faster than the .223. If my Black Special was a 22/250 I'd still have it.

the fact that he mentioned that ammo cost is a factor eliminates the swift. if the following is true:
that winchester ammo in .22-250 is $22.95 a box (of 40) at Bass Pro I was there a few days ago.

Walmart also price matches if you dont want to drive to Bass Pro go in and say I can get it for this from Bass Pro and give them the phone number

then the swift more than doubles the price of the .22-250 white box ammo. you cant even get 20 rounds of .220 swift for that much.
the small performance increase does not justify the jump in price, much less the shorter barrel life (yes this is a factor - not as big a factor nowadays but the .220 swift still burns barrels faster than either the .223 or .22-250) or the less available ammo.

Hi

Barrel twist has been mentioned before, but it's worth mentioning again. I would be more concerned with finding a barrel that will stabilize the bullets I intend to use than with the differences between the swift and 22-250 ...

I'll be shooting what ever is cheapest at walmart or canadian tire. I'm not going to spend alot on ammunition for getting rid of varmits like coyotes

humm then I'm out of ideas if Walmart and CT are your only options then I dont know....223 will be cheaper to shoot unless there is a "Bass Pro" kind of place that has cheaper ammo.
