Powder prices going up.

What those that complain about the 17 cent carbon tax strangely never complain about the oil companies 80 cent price jack up, during a time of decreasing oil prices. A Pox on both groups.

Best gun salesman are U.S. presidents. The more anti gun they are the more guns people buy. Look what happened here with the Turds recent bans. Greatest increase in pistol sales in Canadian history before the ban. Same with AR’s and other black rifles. TELL US we can’t have something and we want it even if we didn’t want it before.

Now there is some REAL TRUTH ! RJ

If you lived through the '70s you'll realize we don't have record inflation. Still much more than the Bank Of Canada is comfortable with, so we get higher interest rates to quell demand. Though as one on a fixed income, what we have is bad news.

In 1977 the Canadian dollar with worth $1.10 to the American dollar. I remember this because I hunted in the state of Maine that year.

Maybe its more sane in the states, but N570 powder pricing has gone up ~35% since the pandemic.
Just looked at my order history for N570 since 2021. All in costs, including shipping and taxes, was $140.64/kg in 2021, $178.20/kg in mid-2023 and $190.34/kg from 2 weeks ago. Same CGN vendor.

Pre and during the pandemic I took advantage of everyone jumping on the 6 something needmore crazy and off loading anything 308 related and hoarded as much possible powder and bullets.

Finally found a large stash of Win Staball Match at $66.00 per pound.

Let's see what the going price is for them in distant future.

Paid $49.99 for IMR 3031 from a LGS in the east end of Toronto many years ago. Now, LGS in the north end of Toronto is listing them for $71.99

Yup, been hoarding affordable 4064. Varget is pricey locally but less in demand. 4350 is off the rails. Let em have it, I'm sticking with 308 so I don't have to wait 6 mths to pay $110/lb for powder.

Nice on the 4064. I missed out when tenda had them in stock.

No one locally has them in stock. Online outside of T.O.... $72 per pound

it is not more sane in the states
My shooting friends down there are telling me that the pinch is hitting them as well.
ammo prices and availlabilty are under duress and reloading components and powders are seeing incremental price increases and shortages.
primers..... the demand has never been higher in the civillian market in the USA and they too are seeing pricing and availlabilty issues.
Everyone I know that is a gun owner in the USA is in buying mode right now when it comes to ammo and reloading components.
Get it while you still can.

Maybe you haven't noticed but most IMR and Hodgdon's powders have more than doubled in the same timeframe.

Depends on which powder you're talking about.
I was buying Varget and H4350 in 2021 for $60/lb. Today's prices of $88/lb at Cabelas for 8lb jugs are ~35% higher, but I just bought an 8lb jug of H4350 just before Xmas for $550+tax ($72/lb). Varget was the same price as H4350 then.
I bought H110 for $42.50/lb in mid-2021 from X-Reload, and bought more for $42/lb this past Halloween. CFE223 more than doubled for sure. I'm pretty sure I paid $45/lb a year ago from Fly's, so it may be up 80% in just the past year.
But the powders I use the most, Varget, H4350 and N570, have all gone up roughly 35% since 2021.

I was buying Hodgdon High Gun for 37 / lb for the past yr, from my supplier in Ontario. Lookin a couple days ago, it just went up 9 bucks a lb !!! It's NOW 46 /lb !!! Almost a 30% increase. Jumpin Jaysuz boyz get a grip !!!! Glad my last buy was an 8 pounder !

In the summer of 2021 a small sports shop was closing down and I bought 3 lb Retumbo and 2 lb RL25 for $25.99 per pound, plus 3,000 Rem 9 1/2 LRM primers for $19 / 1000 that was the last of the stuff they had unfortunately. I found more at another small shop about a month later $36/ lb and bought the last 4 they had, watching prices now I'm sure glad I did, if you can find retumbo now it's probably $100 by the time you get it to your door and primers well $250 - $400 / 1000 with no end in sight.

I did some quick calculations the other day and had to pick myself up off the floor!
At one time it was very inexpensive to shoot black powder cartridge rifles and shotguns as oppoised t smokeless powder cartridges.
Not anymore!
80 grains of black as opposed to 21 grains of smokeless for the same 1,200 FPS velocity of a 1 ounce load, just for a typical comparison.
The price of a pound of FFG as opposed to say, HS6 , is very telling as well......
Crazy........

I bought powder from Higgisons in 2001 when i went to the NS Nationals. Sp85 13.00# similar to 3N37 . Now 3N37 is what 90 a # crazy. But sign of the times!

Only if you'rer living 20 years in the past and comparing surplus powder prices to equivalent commercial offerings of the present day.

I tend to do the same thing and bought a lot of powder from Tom before he passed.

A lot of it was free, because I did a lot of load testing for them and a lot of it was under $5/pound.

I have a few pounds of powder from Old Tom, and I buy bulk orders from Andrew still.
Great people!

I stopped just before Covid shortages, etc. Not because I don't like the prices or what's available but in all honesty, I just don't need any more propellants, primers, or bullets.

I likely won't be purchasing any more firearms for the same reason. If I want something new to play with, I'll just build it from the materials, bits, etc I have on hand.

We all reach a point where slowing down is no longer a matter of choice.

Higginson's is still a great place to purchase reloading materials

Just this afternoon, I loaded up 60 rounds of 338-06, using Higginson's 47N surplus powder (N160), which I've had for 25 years.
